list of unbeaten teams was trimmed do wn to two squads as the eagles dropped their first game of the season to red del papa s new town by the score of 38 35 the american legion and st john s quintets collected their first wins and the individual scoring race was all scrambled as two newcomers griffith of the england squad and erb johnson american legion moved up into the select i five Is new town sneaks past eagles with a 38 35 win in the feature game of the night new town and the eagles clashed in a battle of unbeaten teams and when the smoke had cleared away it was new town that still had the perfect mark of five wins and no losses As everyone expected the game was close and hard fought all the way and saw ape the eagles lead the new downers towners all the way thru the first half the birdmen set up such a tight zone defense that new town with its high scoring aces clarke johnsen and johnny were unable to solve it so tight was this protection around the eagle bailiwick that new town was unable to score from the field until 14 minutes of the 1st half had gone by even then they could manage but one field goal during the entire first halt half the result of playing it so close was that the eagles had 13 fouls called against them and new town converted 8 of cm ein into points in the meantime the eagles had collected five field goals and converted 4 out of seven fouls into points and at the half time inter mission had a lead of 14 10 mckendrick fouls out billy mckendrick fouled out of the game with 9 minutes of playing time remaining and this was the blow that proved the difference in the two clubs the second half was terrific as the tempo of the action increased and no less than seven times in the last half the score was all tied up playing for N T for the first time bob was som and otto graham both turned in excellent games and were large ly responsible for the win with only 90 seconds remaining I 1 in the ball game the eagles had a narrow 35 34 lead and it locked like they would be able to hang on to the ball long enough to get the victory but then clarke john sen stole the ball away from john ny paulos fired to joe busico and 11 ill joe dunked er in and new town had the one point to their credit referee dean bevan cal led a technical foul on paulos when johnny protested too astren bously and before the squabble was settled paulos had been banished from the game playing the last minute with only four players the eagles tried desperately to get the ball but in applying the press they left a man open under the basket and new town collected one more field goal to give them the victory by three points wassom plays good game came bob doc wassom played a great game and scored 8 points in the second half otto graham was all over the place and also chipped in with 8 points most of them coming just when the towners downers needed them the most clarke johnsen as usual gave his oppen ants fits with his ball hawking tactics and managed to add another 8 points high scoring johnny was held in check all evening and was able to score but one field goal and 3 free shots for 5 points but still leads the individual scoring race for the eagles angelo cerroni and keever jankovich played outstanding ball cerroni converted 7 out of 7 and added 3 field goals to capture high scoring honors for the game with 13 points jankovich controlled both back boards and played a beautiful floor game bill mckendrick turned in an excel lional guard game and his loss via the foul route was keenly felt by the eagles TOD no I 1 takes easy wm win from TOD no 2 TOD no I 1 kept their record un blemished with an easy 49 13 win over TOD no 2 with ken johnson and dick johnson controlling the boards and speed merchants johnny nelson and cliff williams driving TOD crazy with their speed faking and deadly shots no 2 wa was just no match for this smooth working aggregation nelson amov ed up into number 2 spot in the scoring race based on game aver age as he dunked in 19 points Blickens derfer was high point man for no 2 with five points with frank erickson turning in the best floor game Amer american icom legion takes 48 42 overtime win horn from En glands in the first overtime game of 0 the season the american legion ran wild in the overtime period to run up 7 points in three minutes and send the england squad down to its fourth defeat in five games at the end of the regular playing time the score was all even 39 39 but in the overtime erb johnson broke loose for four points and got two more with burr adding a charity toss for good measure while the best eng lands could do was a field goal by and a foul shot by griffith johnson was high point man of the game with 24 also high scorer for the night with hawking the ball like he was a arald someone else would puncture it if he got a hold of it this combination proved just a bit too much for En glands griffith with 19 points most of them made at uncanny angles and who turned in 1 a bang up game from his guard slot look ed best for En glands st john takes thrilling 31 30 win over deseret in another close hard fought con test the st john team edged past the deseret gas house gang on a last second basket by gerald sagers by the score of 31 30 this game saw deseret lead by bill riddell leon gates and don frosheiser lead all the way through the game until just before the final buzzer when sagers popped one in for the close victory frosheiser of deseret lead the scorers with 12 points while jack evans led st john with 10 points As the recreation league progresses each team continues to show vast improvement and the brand of competition grows keener and keener even though new town TOD no 1 and the eagles continue to be the class of the league next thursday february 19 the only two remaining unbeaten teams new town and TOD no 1 will collide at 8 30 and the winner of this game should go on to capture the bunting in regular league play after the end of the regular season the tour four top teams meet in a round robin for a special trophy and it looks as though three of those teams will be new town TOD no 1 and the eagles with and deseret fighting it out for the fourth spot these two teams also meet the same night and the winner will probably be the fourth team in the round rob |
