league aspect in the games played last wednesday wh ch feature ed three well pitched finely played games and one upset in which an underdog combined metals team stood up and smacked down a strong stockton nine 16 to 5 starting off the proceedings in the second inn aiming iming ng bauer got one run on a walk to D ck evans followed by a s agle by algood evans scoring however stockton got the run back in the r half of the inn ing in much the same manner when kopher drew a base on balls small got on when mckendrick bo bled his hit then john thomas hit to the second baseman who thre v him out at I 1 kopher ropher scoring the third inning proved rous for stockton when led off w th a single curry fan ned dunlavy hit evans walked algood hit mckendrick walked cox hit talmadge walked and nash hit a long fly to right field after all the hits and walks had been put together no less than 5 tall es had crossed the platter and that was the game in the bottom half of the fourth stockton tried to get back in the ball game by scoring 4 runs on three hits and a walk including a two bagger by swede erickson but that was all they could score and went on to add three more runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth the five hits allowed by algood for bauer made him seem very stingy to stockton and in the meantime algood s teammates were pounding small john tho mas and jim hewett I 1 for or 15 bingles league as they hammered out a 7 1 win over tooele thoele ordnance depot behind the nice two hit pit ching of angelo cerroni cerroni had the TOD batters completely at his mercy as he al lowed but two hits while striking out 8 and was deprived of a shut out in the fourth inning when cen c en ter fielder jackson singled advance ed to second on an error and scored on Blickens derfer ers s single for TOD s lone run of the game batmen on the mound for TOD meanwhile was being hit regularly by red del papa s boys who bunch ed the r hits at the right time and took advantage of a couple of nas ty errors to collect their seven runs richards first man up in the sec ond inn ng rapped out a double and del papa followed with a tr r pie for one run and morrell fol lowed this up with another single to drive in del papa klenda big hitter tooele thoele scored two more runs in the third inning on single by pal ion a TOD outfield error and an other single by klenda they were held scoreless in the fourth inning but in the fifth pallon drew a walk and scored on klenda s double to add one more run to their score and in the sixth versal shields led off with a double was faced to third and scored wednesday afternoon A close shave bob finck started on the mound for and was promptly touch ed for one run in the first inning when he gave up a walk to dry canyon manager clarke johnsen johnsen stole second base and scored on fayette mcfarlands McF arlands double in the second inning short stop baum smacked one of finck s pitches for a triple and for a while it appeared that that was as far as he was going to get as finck bore down and struck out the next two batters but wim nelson was safe on Bloom bloomberg bergs s error baum scoring then vano vario lined out a long double to center field scoring var lo 10 at this point in the proceedings bus harwood took over the pitch ing duties for deseret and ended the rally by striking out dale lea tham in the bottom of the third inn ing wim nelson on the mound for dry canyon who up to this point hadrit t allowed a single hit mom enta rily lost control and with the loss of his control went the loss of the ball game harwood got a single and then nelson walked finck gene sin and cox forcing in harwood with s first run bill riddell got a broken bat single over the shortstops head to drive in finck and sin and bloomberg got another single to drive in cox with the fourth chemical run of the inning chemical got their last run in die the sixth inning when jensen was safe on otto graham s error a single by taft ahlstrom and har woods double bus harwood in the meantime was wheeling the ball past the dry canyon boys giving up but 2 hits walking none and striking out six to get credit for his fifth win of the year as against no loss es best against W C CC C nelson for dry canyon came the closest to taming the hard hit ting chemical crew than any other other pitcher in the league he gave up just six hits and only harwood s double went for extra bases but his lapse in the third inning brov ed just enough wedge for deseret to pry out the victory clarke johnsen who has taken over the reigns at dry canyon has brought his club along in great style a gang of guys that play smart heads up baseball all the way and you can take it from dry canyon will be mighty tough to beat from here BUS HARWOOD manager jimmy alcorn of west ern chemical center has under his wing a ball club that has run up a victory streak of twelve straight games in the tooele thoele coun ty baseball loop and a great deal of the credit for this win when bus toes the rubber it means nothing but trouble for the appo harwood is one of those players that literally cut his teeth on the horsehide and all his life bus has been a pitcher his first taste of league compe was in high school and even though tofele tooele s won and lost rec ord wasn gasn t too good bus averaged 15 strikeouts per game for the white buffaloes the next year harwood coined the tooele thoele city team and pitched tooele thoele to championship of the old indie league in salt lake city last year this mighty mite of the mound was serving them up for stockton and as usual was a tough nut to crack out there on the mound when western chemical center decided to enter a team in the tooele thoele county race for 48 bus harwood was a much sought after must for jimmy alcorn s harwood los ing pitcher nelson PENDLETON HURLS ONE HITTER ST JOHN DOWNS TOD MIL 4 0 dean pendleton turned in the best pitching performance of the tooele thoele county league wednesday when he turned back TOD military with a nifty one hit shut out pend leton faced only 22 batters in f fash ash coning his shut out and was in trouble in the second inning only third baseman was the spoiler of pendleton s no hit ter when he got a single meno the next hitter drew a free trip to first base with in the meantime working his way around to third base with the runner on third meno stole second and when saw that catcher dan russell had elected to make a play for meno he broke for home but shortstop bill russell had cut the throw to second and fired to dan russell to nip at the plate other than that it was three up and three down all during the game winning run scored in first inning st john scored what wha t proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the first inning when ray rus hus sell first man up lined out a sing ie le calvin green followed with an other single and bill russell drove ray home with another single that ended the scoring until the fifth inning when st john added insurance runs lyman russell was sate safe on an error and scored on lynn brays bray s double bray scamper ed across the plate on D russell russells s fielder fielders s choice st john scored their last run in the sixth inning with a base on balls to cal green an error and two long outfield outs produced this last run lynn bray at second base for st john handled five chances without a miscue as st john backed up Pendle pendleton tons s performance by play ing errorless ball bray also got the e only extra base blow of the game a double in the fifth inning browand who handled the hur ling for TOD military got off to a shaky start by giving up four hits in the first frame but from then on he settled down and gave up but two hits the remainder of the game but his mates refused to cooperate has crack ed out 23 hits in 50 trips to the plate for a average hits for distance bob is a power hitter with a big percentage of his hits going for those extra bases among his 23 hits are five home runs and five doubles he has crossed the plate 23 times himself and is credited with 24 runs batted in his average puts him right near the top of leading hitters in the league with harwood pitching
