Show iced field at tream streams by vemon vernon W shields on un Thur thursday sclay march the I 1 utah sportsmen s association in cooperation with the boy scout or gamza tion will sponsor a special meeting and program for the bene fit of the junior sportsmen of too ele county it has long been the belief of the utah Sports sportsmen mens s As socia fion that something more should be done in the way of ed our young men and boys in wild life conservation and other fish and game problems I 1 have sat through numerous meetings of this association which were corn coni ing to gripes with various phrases of wild life management whether it was the catching of too many short fish shooting game out of season pollution of streams and akes lakes preventing the killing of doe as as or and game problems the members all came to the same conclusion that what we need is more ed especially education ot of our boys and girls so that the next generation will know better the U S A has finally decided to do something about it whether it will be successful remains to be seen if successful here in tooele thoele coun ty junior Sports sportsmen mens s units will be organized in every county of the state As a special feature of this march meeting the assoria tion has secured an authority on hawks and falconbery fal conery as well as other wild life conservation he is mr morlan W nelson of salt lake city mr nelson has been studying birds for the past fifteen years and his special interest in hawks in general began on a ranch in north dakota at that time he marvel led at the speed of the bullet hawks as well as their courageous nature and so he was tempted to tram train one of these birds but he was far from successful until given some assistance by the noted eng lish falconer captain C W R knight he gave mr nelson the first indoctrination to the art of falconry from that time on he has been flying and training fal cons and hawks of all species mr nelson was in world war II 11 as a ski trooper and first went to kiska faska in the aleutians here he spent his spare time trapping falcons and birds of all kinds it was here that he had a chance to see the largest of all falcons the gerfalcon from the aleutians mr nelson was sent to italy to fight in the Ap still with the ski troops after attaining the rank of captain mr nelson was wounded seriously by a machine gun and shrapnel while recuperating in italy he had the chance to see and start training some european falcons upon re turning to the united states he took back his old job as a soil scientist with the soil conserva tion service since that time he has been trapping and photograph ing in color all the native rap raptorial tonal birds mr nelson s lecture and dem on should prove very inter esting sting as well as educational all sportsmen young and old should attend the boy scout court of honor will be conducted the same evening according to figures just beleas ed by the fish and game department utah received dollars for five hundred and eighty nine beaver pelts the pelts were sold recently at the den er fur auction half of this money will go 90 to the trappers and land owners who trapped the animals during the regular season the other half will go to the fish and game department and will be applied to game funds we are concerned with one thing mr leonard said and that is the best price we can get for the trapper and for the sportsmen whose funds we administered this year we jumped the middle man mail and gave the trapper that much more pay for his work mr ross director left last week for st louis where he will address the he north american wildlife confer t ence on state licenses and game regulations mr leonard has made an extensive study of state licenses I 1 and has concluded that because license fees and fishing and hunting regulations are set up by legislatures isla tures in most every state to make uniform regulations would take years to accomplish and then only about ten percent of the states would cooperate mr leonard believes that reciprocal license fees and fishing and hunting regulations among all states Is impossible |
