Show prominent utah mining pioneer dies aged 82 richard J evans one of the most prominent figures in mining history in utah died tuesday in salt lake city at the age of 82 from ailments due to his age he was born in greenwich michigan january 27 1865 and as a young man had his first mining experience at calu met he later taught school and after that managed the saginaw courier herald in 1894 the paper published the largest edition up to that time in michigan he was married september 23 1893 to bertha may la due and I 1 in 1896 he came to utah to visit his cifes parents on account of his hl health he soon resumed his active interest in mining and from then on figured widely in developing organizing utah mines his fust first operation in utah tah was drining to organize the modoc mining co in the mercur district later he as aisted in the installation of retorts to treat quicksilver ore from the famous sacramento mine his in teresta took him to bingham park city antic tintic and throughout ahn th state at opha he helped organize the tintic gintic ophir mines owners of large productive areas on lion hill he was a member of the A merican mining congress for many year he is survived by his widow and two sons R J evans of tooele thoele and S L evans jersey city one grandson three granddaughters two great grandchildren and one sister janet eveland of detroit funeral services will be conduct ed friday at 12 30 p m at the masonic temple in salt lake city private burial services will be con ducted at the family plot in mt olivet cemetery |
