Show field stream by VERNON W SHIELDS the following advertisement ap feared recently in a los angeles newspaper DEER HUNTERS act now if you want to hunt deer in utah send for reservations essentials furn dished except gun ammunition and personals per perso season starts oct 17 license refunded if no deer lowell lowe 11 johnson cleveland utah it looks like selfish individuals are making a racket out of our al ready depleted deer herds why should outsiders be invited in to kill our deer hunters in utah can take care of all the deer we have here it s time the sportsmen of utah woke up and put a stop to this 1 I have made my own personal survey of the bucks that were k I 1 led on the west heaston preserve from bate s canyon south to aph r canyon I 1 have found that nearly 80 percent of all bucks taken out of this area were only two point ers this md ind cates to me that our buck crop is being bretty pretty well har vested every year A few years back you were more apt to get a four our five or six po anter than a two pointer I 1 know of th arty bucks that were taken out of settlement can yon on the opening day only four were over two years old I 1 am of the opinion that this cond t on should be watched very carefully or we are going to be running out of bucks in this area within the next three or four years during this deer season five elk were killed by deer hunters in middle canyon and vicinity the killing of one of these elk created rather a bad situation kenneth lloyd of this city shot and killed a young bull elk after he had realized his mistake he promptly set out to do what any real sportsman would have done he dressed out the elk and im mediately came to town to the proper authorities he spent a considerable amount of time trying to locate a game warden finally he found the game warden and took him to where he had killed the elk after due examination it was decided that the horns of the elk did resemble those of a deer it was the opinion of the game warden that this shooting was purely accidental and that mr lloyd had acted in a very sports man like manner however in ord er to officially carry out his duties he called the state fish and game commission and asked for a ruling on this particular case after some debating the fish and game corn com mission advised the warden that they could not make an exception in this case mr lloyd had broken the law by killing an elk out of season and should be arrested and prosecuted I 1 maintain that this is rotten injustice mr lloyd could have let the elk lay and spoil like the other four and no one would have known the difference be cause he was a true sportsman by admitting his mistake and trying to do the right thing he is now ar rested and subject to a heavy fine duck hunting on the opening day in tooele thoele was very good most everyone I 1 heard from reported getting their limit in a short time of course it doesn t take long to get four ducks if you get any kind of shooting at all the wife and I 1 hunted at the crandall duck club and we got six of the first flock that came over at about six fifty a in it didn dian t take long to get the other two it was all over before we hardly got started duck hunting at salt spring seventeen miles south of wendover is exceptionally good this year 1 this area is open to duck hunters providing they first obtain a per nut mit from the provost marshall at wendover permits are granted to anyone making the request for them the permits are required be cause salt spring is now on a mil gitary reservation since our last snow storm the geese have started to come into the valley several good sized flocks have been observed at erda and Lake point pheasant season opens on sat arday november the first and con finues through to five thirty p m november the third shooting hours are from seven a m to five thirty p m the limit is three birds per day and the possession limit is six pheasant hunters around here |
