Show Is tod park A nice place to live by W D bush at a meeting held last wednesday night in the city hall mem bers of the tooele thoele city council met with residents of TOD park sen sol selvin and other interested persons in an effort to clear up mis understandings which have arisen from spreading rumors in re gard to the proposed transfer of TOD park from the to the war department upwards of 60 people attended the meeting principal points brought out at the discussion were that residents of TOD park were asking for nothing but the privilege of living in a decent place one man who has resided in TOD park for four years said that it is a disgraceful place to live and an eyesore to the whole county charges of no upkeep by the present administrators poor garbage disposal no medical facilities available no improve ments on run down units antiquated methods of the no police protection poor transportation to tooele thoele no attempt to son arol epidemics and other forms of negligence were upheld by the representatives there one woman reported that tooele thoele doctors will not come out to TOD park even for emergencies and that a child died some time ago because no doctor could be obtained efforts to use the services of the post surgeon at the ordnance depot for eberg enches were squelched by tooele thoele practitioners she stated one lady pointed out that she could go to salt lake city on the bus cheaper than she could to tooele by cab and that for that reason she did shopping there it a good transportation system could be initiated from tooele thoele to TOD park she said more people would shop and seek entertain ment in tooele thoele all these complaints and re quests have been studied by this writer and the following results noted LIVING conditions at TOD park there are 1080 units of this number were de dared surplus to the need one year d fago go and ordered to be stripped the fixate res were to be removed and uk ulato to equip other housing pro 8 00 of the units were stripped accordingly r d n g I 1 y there are now houses for tenants of this num ber are now occupied leav ing 70 available for occupancy at the presort the which were not stripped it is assumed must have been left vacant without maintenance care principally be cause of a lack of funds and help TOD park employs at this time a crew of 8 maintenance people an office force of five one night sher iff and 3 other employees who divide time between TOD park Edge mount garfield and other housing projects in this lo 10 calita this makes a total of 3 regular employees and four part time employees units rent at the following prices bachelor units furnished 2450 a month angle S agle bedroom units furnished 2700 27 00 a month un furnished 2300 a month atwol two I 1 bedroom units furnished a month unfurnished 2500 25 00 a month three bedroom units fur dished a month dished 2700 a month furniture consists of beds for each bedroom ice box coal range coal heater chairs tables studio couch mirror chests of drawers and other miscellaneous household items fuel for the stoves will av 5 00 per month in the sum mer and two to three times that figure in the winter depending on the size of the unit some ten ants report it is virtually imps sible to keep the units properly heated in the cold days davs of winter no gas available electric hot plates are used for preparing meals by some of the people in the sum mer time but are not supposed to be because they tax the electric circuits refrigerators are permit ted but the user must pay an ad dit ional a month to offset the added electricity used cost of us ing me ice in the government provid ed cooperators runs around 4 00 to per month depending on the weather one lady stated that it cost her 40 a month to live in her one bedroom unit and that she didn dian t figure she was living in a decent place at that besides this she explained that she put in about two hours of her own time each day cutting wood making fires and so on which would be eliminated if the army was to take over the project and install electric or gas appliances paint for the houses has been available in limited quan titles and many residents report that unless you know the main cenance man you won t get any no matter how many times you ask for it the does not furnish the labor for painting the units this is all done by the ten ants themselves when houses are vacated they often left to the vandalism of the juveniles in the park or neg lecter and not checked to see that they are kept in a livable condi cond tion As an example A family moved out of a unit and shortly after 4 army enlisted men were continued on page 4 tod T 0 d P a r ke 0 0 continued from page 1 move movel I 1 into it for temporary when the barracks was as made ready on the post these soldiers were moved out and when they left all the furniture was left in the house the wind blew one door shut so hard that it broke the glass out now cats take up residence in the abandoned unit sleeping on the beds and scratching up what f there is in there some time ago the plumbing fixtures were removed from the place but not the other furnishings one can only ask if it will remain in that cond t on until it has suffered the v anter s blast if so it can be elim mated from uncle sam sams s assets and put down as a liability POLICE protection policing of TOD park inasmuch are often left to the vandalism of its is left to the county peace of f cers one night deputy is em aloyed there by the county sher iff no deputy or police officer is there during the day time ordin airily however the sheriff sheriffs s office is on call at all times and accord 1 ing to deputies more time i is S spent in TOD park than in adv other part of the county juvenile delinquency is common as witnessed by the recent burglary of the post office and market there and other crimes in the past there have been warn ings given to several in regards to conduct and some arrests made for the same residents re port gasoline hub caps and other things stolen from their cars even wood and coal is pilfered many workers from the east and other sections of the country have ar rived m ed there without sufficient cent funds to tide them over until their first pay day one woman reported that a six month old baby was dincov ered in but toilet tissue and the rest of the family poorly clothed and fed another re port to this writer was of a whose small children are left fend for es during the time and have been seen eating out of garbage cans such things do not come under the sheriffs duties but it Is up to somebody to aid these people or keep them out of the county assistance from welfare workers is received and appreciated but other cases go unaided not be cause of failure of the welfare de apartment part ment but because the cases are not reported hence no one knows the family needs help the best way to describe the medical facilities at TOD park is to simply say there are none the tooele thoele doctors do most of the treating of TOD park patients but according to all reports only one of them will come out to the hous ing project the story is told of a boy who was dangerously ill III his mother summoned tooele thoele doctors one at a time getting the same re ply from all bring the boy over the one doctor who would have come was not in town the moth er upon advice from a neighbor called a salt lake doctor and he came to TOD park all the way from salt lake city he said that the boy could not have been moved without his life being endangered yet tooele thoele doctors would have had him moved because they couldn coulden t come to TOD park it is a known fact that tooele thoele doctors are overworked that they are too few ew in numbers to adequately han lie dle all the patients that come to hem them that even in tooele thoele it is ard to get a doctor to the home still hlll it must be remembered that TOD park is a community of over 2100 people nearly twice the size of grantsville Grants ville and is without a regular medical practitioner there would be a lucrative practice in TOD park for some live wire doc doe tor and the suggestion was made that TOD park should try to ob tarn tain a doctor for that project to handle the practice there maybe such a suggestion rates considers con sidera tion but in its present condition what could TOD park possibly of fer a professional man in the way of living and recreational accorn true TOD park could probably provide a doctor with enough patients to give him a good living but what doctor would want to live in TOD park it must be remembered that tooele doctors get most of the money the TOD parkers spend for medical atten tion and in cases of emergency it would be to their advantage to drive the three miles to the park A movement was underway last summer to obtain the services of the post surgeon this had to go through the proper channels but after working on it it was finally approved and the doctor was permission to go to park on call during his off duty hours there was no danger of this hurting the local doctors practices inasmuch as they were overwork ed anyway rather it might have served to relieve them a little and at the same time save a lot of suffering people in TOD park how ever the suffering of humanity and the illnesses of the people did not seem important in comparison with the things that an american dollar would buy even it if it was a TOD park dollar so pressure was put in the right places and the doc doe to TOD park on missions of mercy clearing up the situation a mil ind gitary spokesman representing too ele ordnance depot said it is a army regulations for any member of the armed forces to run competition with civilians that was that no fault of the war dept of course but still N whether hether its competition or not if it would have relieved human misery it would have been a fine thing one TOD park girl told me her husband was very sick and she had been treating him through a salt lake doctor who advised her to call one of the local doctors if he should get worse one night the man was found unconscious and the young wife probably scared seared to death picked up the telephone and called the doctor that had been recommended to her when informed of the situation dr X re plied you better get hold of dr Y this is my week end off dr Y was called and told the girl to bring her husband over but to be there in 15 minutes or he was leev leav ing she did manage to get him over there in time and treated and as the couple hurried out the door the doctor remarked I 1 m going to lock this place up before anybody else comes to bother me these men remember are the ones who live by the oath of hippocrates many more instances of a sim ilar nature could be cited one ot of an infant dying because no doctor would come but to relate them would take up several more col dumns there is no question in the mind of this writer that the doctors pres antly practicing in tooele thoele are the finest that can be had tooele thoele maternity hospital has one of the lowest mortality rates from child birth in the country and in everything from taking out tonsils and performing other surgery to pulling a splinter out of a finger the titio ners in tooele thoele are just about the best to be found there is no question either that boele really needs more doctors one or two or even more there is no doubt that the present medical men put in a full 8 hours and probably overtime every day the only question is could TOD park have better med ical service serviced 7 the answer is yes transportation taxi fare from TOD park to too ele is 75 cents that mean that if five people ride in the cab it its s 75 cents apiece neither does it mean that the 75 cents is split among the five of them As I 1 und ersland it the fare is 75 cents for each party or group of people five members of one family ride it s seventy five cents for the load if one group is taken to different locations the price is 75 cents for each pickup the price is not out of line but it is out of the reach of most of the people peoples s pocketbooks the advantage of taxi service is that the cabs run all night 24 hours a day good weather or bad and if someone has to get to too ele to a doctor quick they can make it buses begin running to TOD park at 7 45 a in making six trips dur ing the day the last one at 4 40 p m the price is 15 cents one way 25 cents round trip and books of tickets can be bought at a dis count A to to thoele tooele to a movie could not go 10 on uv the bus bu S as shows do not begin until the evening A taxi would have to be taken home and the fare face would be nearly as much as the price of the ticket shoppers who stay in tooele thoele longer than 4 40 miss the bus and take a cab home any saving made on the purchase of groceries in town is nullified by the added expense of the return fare home unless a group rides the cab and pays the bill together As mentioned be fore cab fares are not out of line they are only out of reach of most of the TOD park wage earners A government operated bus runs to salt lake every morning the full fare for a round trip is 70 cents thus a person can go to salt lake cheaper than he can to tooele thoele though tooele thoele is only 3 miles away and salt lake is 43 transportation to and from TOD park is a major problem for those who do not have cars and the only solution can come from those in te rested enough to try to do some thing to alleviate the situation GARBAGE DISPOSAL garbage is now collected twice a week at TOD park through the et ef forts of the TOD activity club bet ter service has been obtained but the main complaint now seems to be no covers for garbage cans the close quarters in which people are forced to live is a dangerous in vi tation to the spread of disease and epidemics have nearly been started because of this uncovered garbage containers encourage the spread of filth and disease dogs and cats tip over cans continuous ly and garbage can be seen strewn through the alleys on occasion often times the cans are tossed carelessly to the ground after being emptied by the collector and rolls into the street there to be run over or dented until they are no longer serviceable A health inspector would not hesitate to con damn TOD park as an unhealthy place to live and one which could be definitely improved as far as sanitation is concerned at the meeting last week it was brought to light that TOD park turned over 81 to the govern ment in profits last year the ques tion is being asked where is all i that money going goings Is the govern ment going to continue to take that money without giving any thing in return how about getting a little slice of the profits to make a decent place for the people to live the people ore are the govern ment democracy is government by of and for the people the people should be asked for an opinion on how to spend their money once in a while and if it is being spent foolishly and plenty of it is then they should know that too the suggestion was brought up that TOD park should form its own city government elect its own of fibers tax its people set rental fees and run the town themselves has anybody that you know of ever asked the government for anything 7 did he get it ita could the residents of TOD park take it over and operate it 7 9 the would squelch any such move we are sure for the govern ment considers itself fully capable at of running its own housing projects what few concessions have been granted to the people at TOD park have been obtained by begging on hands and knees as one resident puts it such a plan would be fine I 1 am sure if it would be sible but that is not uncle sam sams s way of doing things would the war department set up s cut rate tax free gasoline stations taverns gambling devices etc etca Is that the army way of do ing things of course it isn t maj or poudre speaking for the corn com aandrig mand ng officer of tooele thoele ord digance nance depot states that it is a a t army |
