Show spotlighting UTAH utah story told in washington D C drawing wide attention in wash ington df D C is an elaborate utah exhibit sponsored by the library of congress in the rotunda of the capitol building the items in the exhibit have been drawn from the library s almost inexhaustible files from the national archives from state war and other departments and from the files of the geology ical survey many of the historical documents are on exhibition for the f time especially an array of old maps tracing the develop ment of the utah country from the days of the earliest explorers the mim tin exhibit occupies 34 cases and the photographic display of early utah indians made by J K hillers of the U S geological survey as early as 1870 occupies the same amount of space the story of brigham young s first trek to salt lake valley in 1847 is recalled by an interesting array of documents and data on exhibition old books as well as harper harpers s weekly and other mag abines of the fifties which told much of early utah life have been assembled the coming of the rail road the driving of the golden spike and educational develop ment of the state down to the pre sent time is depicted along with the state states s agricultural and miner al developments the exhibit has probably the largest display of utah mus e ever gathered er including folklore songs made famous during the trek across the plains this utah exhibit will be on dis play throughout the entire sum mer in the nations capitol no recession seen for utah recently conducted business sur veys of the west as well as in utah indicate utah s population has in creased per cent since 1940 as compared with a national in crease of 7 73 3 per cent the west ward migration of people which started during the war still shows no sign of halting and all evidence indicates that western population gains will be retained and continue to grow the result of such growth wherein utah has gained new residents means an expanded market which opens the door for new business and permits the ex mansion of established businesses utah land tracts made available i changes in policy and procedure of the small land tract act of 1938 have been announced by depart ment of interior secretary J A krug at washington which will now release small federal public lands tracts throughout utah for purchase after a year years s tenancy under government lease S tes s suitable for homes camps health recreation or business are now a through the bureau of land management offices in utah leases already pending for individual small tracts center near large recreational areas such as bryce and zion canyons and the wayne wonderland utah visitors increase A 15 per cent increase in visitors to temple square during may I 1 over may of the previous year is see in figures released by the temple square mission L D S I 1 church in may 1947 65 per sons registered at the bureau of information on temple square the may previous more movies in monument valley monument valley where stage I 1 coach and darling clementine were filmed is scheduled for more picture making starting july 20 when director john ford will film war party to be released through R K 0 the utah department of publicity and ment has teen informed I 1 the script calls for the use of indians and cavalrymen all of whom will be recruited from southeastern utah navajo indians who manage to eke out near star ex istance in the region will be greatly benefited through the employment afforded by the mo tion picture company the th e holly wood cast will include 65 persons and the picture will be three weeks in the making the company will be quartered in the vicinity of the goulding ranch in monument val ley |
