With the Celtic theme "Ever After", the contestants performed their opening num-ber, introducing themselves and stating what their "Ever After" is. With Lauren Wilson as the Mistress of Ceremonies and the crowd favorite Sam Beeson as Master of Ceremonies, the pag-eant moved along well thanks to the "one clap" throughout the evening. Sam entertained the audience by trying to teach them how to throw their voice and he pulled out a few sweet breakdance moves from the 80's. The Vikings finished in 2nd Place at the 5A State Championship. This is the first time the Vikings have placed second since 1977. Photo courtesy of Jim Phelon by Kent Allen When Pleasant Grove High School Head Basketball Coach Randy McCallister put this year's schedule together, he knew that 23 games would com-pletely test the talent and ability of this year's team. Little did he know that when all was s?'d and done, he would have added four extra games and placed he and his Vikings in a position to claim a state championship. On the road to that cham-pionship game, the Vikings had opportunities to prepare specifi-cally for their tournament games as their only losses during the pre and regular season were to Alta, Lone Peak and American Fork. In their first round game, the Vikings played a feisty Lay-to- n team. PG started fast held the lead and never looked back. Senior Matt Conway scored 35 points in that game. Senior Mark Sheffield added 18 and ju-nior guard Riley Court added 1 2 points. For Layton, Brandon Hill scored 23 points and junior Jarriesse Blackmon added 18 points, but he left late in the game with four fouls, three of them committed within two minutes as he attempted to guard Court as time was running out in the last period. The Vikings won this first post seasontournament game 82-6- 9 and had a day to prepare for their quarterfinal game with Alta. In preparation for this game with Alta, the Vikings had a great "a-h- moment as they re-viewed the films from their first losing game with the Hawks in December. McCallister reported that "No one recognized themselves as a team. That's not the way we are playing the game to-day. We've changed since then, we're better than we were back then!" That moment played itself out during the quarterfinal game. Alta led at the end of the first pe-riod, but Pleasant Grove stepped up as the second period started and played Pleasant Grove bas-ketball. Matt Conway scored 25 points, senior Forrest Pin-coc- k scored 18 points and Riley Court scored 1 6. The Vikings knew that Alta was a strong comeback team, so McCallister wanted to get as much separation as possible. He said, "With two minutes left and us up by 20, 1 was still nervous." Pleasant Grove held on and posted a 65-5- 5 win over Alta.
