A sonal scan of the Mite Marina bay, revealing fish population "heavier" than any other area of lake Pow ell, has encouraged Hite General Manager Lou Mallory and Operations Manager Clint Kupp. "In fishing, scenery, and general uncrowdod conditions, Hite has a lot going for it," says Mallory. Mallory, based us he has been for many years at Bullfrog Resort and Marina, sees good times ahead for Hite. "Now that the Park Service has Installed utilities, our next major investment will be a trailer village with full rec vehicle hookups, hopefully next spring. Also in the future is a motel just off Highway 95," he said. Hite personnel say paving of IM5, completed in 197o, has also helped business. The marina itself, about one mile south of the Colorado River bridge, is near confluence of the Colorado and Dirty Devil rivers. Pickup of river runners in Cataract Canyon, now nearly over for the season, is a service which visitors to Hite can enjoy as paid "ride along" observers. The area has a romantic history. It was settled in 1883 by Cass Hite, described as a "prospector and fugitive from justice." Until his death in 1914 Hite operated a ferry, store and a farm. Hite's "modern" history began in l-4 when Canyon-eers. Canyon-eers. Inc., was awarded a concession contract to sell gas, boating and camping supplies and operate a small marina. In 1965 the marina was moved from the south to the north side of Lake Powell, and in 1973 moved to its present location on the south shores. Geographically it is 40 road miles southeast of Hanksville and 70 road miles northwest of Blanding,. The Del E. Webb Corporation purchased Hite Marina In November, 1976.
