GCHS Journalism Dept. Keeping Extra Busy on Multitude of Jobs A mere 13 per cent of the entire student , body isi .responsible .res-ponsible for high school publications pub-lications of al. forms.. Every thing 'from the school paper through '.the literary magazine, maga-zine, both Kt'RA and KSL report, Devil, Perspective, the Mograndah and this page itself are coordinated by some 31 students of Journalism Journa-lism II or Publication. The course is taught by Mrs. .Marj Donoghue, who.' also supervises the individual publications. ; . . The high . school yearbook, always, a big . project, is. being, be-ing, edited this year by Cindy Roberts.. Her regular. staff is made up of three other . members, JUionmSe Wilson, Lynn Brechtel and Cindy Waltersohied. These four are responsible for all of the Mograndah's organization and layout. Kafchy Welch, although al-though not a member of the publications class, does all of the art work for the yearbook. year-book. The Sage Sherry Oliver, in her sec ond year as editor of the High school paper, has as her assistants seventeen students. stu-dents. Their capacities range from layout managers, on through editors of the various var-ious departments and on to the typist. This particular publication is distributed bimonthly bi-monthly to the studentbody members free of, charge. Members of the Sage staff include Shirley Jones, layout lay-out manager; Dan Buckingham, Bucking-ham, ' Advertising Manager; Marilyn Luhrs, News Editor; David Adkinson, Feature Ed- itor; Jim Dickerson, Sports Editor, assisted by Chuck Zimmerman; Steve Boyden, Column Editor; Jeanne Shat-ley, Shat-ley, Circulation ' Manager; Photographer, Randy Sack-erson Sack-erson assisted by Rick Hirschfeld; Artists, Dennis Bailey and Chuck Zimmerman; Zimmer-man; and reporters and typists, typ-ists, Dan Robinson, John Gaither, Don Williams, Allan Al-lan Norton and Alvin Swen-son. Swen-son. Literary Magazine "Expression 70," a collec tion of literary works by high school students, wi!l once again be edited by Pam Larsen. However, somr thing new is being undertaken undertak-en in this department. The Expression staff will also edit a literary magazine of works by elementary students. stud-ents. Betty Gordon and Mary Ann Bowthorpe assist Pam on this publication. New last year was the weekly publishing of a high school page in The Times-Independent. As it was last year, .this page is produced by director, Diana Foy and a staff of four writers. Writing Writ-ing for the TjI this year are Jan-el McDcugald, Terry Mc-Kinnon, Mc-Kinnon, David Adkison and Marc Pinkerton. Radio and television reports re-ports also stem from the publications class. Terry Mc-Kinnon Mc-Kinnon is responsible for the daily KURA report of high school news. Chuck Zimmerman makes a weekly report to KSL of sports at GCHS and Don Williams' handles it on the local lev- el. Don announces the Devil Perspective program which is produced bi-weekly in coordination co-ordination with the educational educa-tional TV department of th3 school district. Photography Job A branch of the publications publica-tions class that is vital to ail phases of publication is headed by Randy Sackerson. Randy and his assistant, Rick Hirschfeld, are responsible respon-sible for all of the photography photo-graphy used by both The Sage and Times staffs and a great deal of the Mograndah Mogran-dah artwork , as wen. i"his is the only part of the class that is totally free of assistance. assis-tance. The actual photography photogra-phy and processing of the film is done entirely by .the two students. Also important to these publications are finances. As the class must function totally on funds acquired by its members through advertising, adver-tising, financial managers also perform important duties. du-ties. Vicki and Viviann Barker Bar-ker are responsible for all of the department's financial finan-cial records. Journalism H is a complex com-plex and demanding, class of skilled writers, photographers photograph-ers and managers under the supervision of a highly qualified qual-ified advisor. Not every instructor in-structor is capable of coordinating coor-dinating 30 different students into 30 different jobs and producing a smooth running publications department. |
