Show New Boating Book Features Utah Lakes By Fran Barns Miller Freeman Publications Publica-tions of San Francisco has released a hard-cover book, "Trailer boats West" that should be of special interest to Utah residents because two of Utah's most beautiful beauti-ful lakes get special treatment treat-ment in the book. First to catch the eye with this large, handsome volume is one of the color photos on its dust jacket which shows a boat towing waterskiers on Lake Powell. Pow-ell. Next, just inside of the hard cover is a beautiful hvo-page duotone photo of another scene on Lake Powell. Pow-ell. The contents of the book is a collection of fifty-six photo-articles which have appeared in "SEA" magazine maga-zine on trailerboating in western waters. The articles arti-cles were updated, grouped by geographic area, then reprinted in convenient book form. The major sections of the 'book are ColiforniaSouth, Desert Waters, California North, Pacific Northwest, and Inlad Empire. Three articles on Lake Powell and vicinity appear in the "Desert Waters" section, and an article on Flaming Gorge Reservoir is included includ-ed under "Inland Empire." The four articles are liberally liber-ally illustrated with photographs photo-graphs and maps and should serve to attract trailerboat owners to Utah waters. The rest of the 236 page book is devoted to articles about coastal waters and other inland lakes and rivers ri-vers of the west. Owners of trailerable boats will find the volume a gold mine of useful information about places to go boating in e'rght of the westernmost states. The book has two obvious obvi-ous weak points, however. Despite its title, it does not afford anything approaching approach-ing comprehensive coverage cover-age of the top boating wa-etrs wa-etrs in the western states, even in the eight represented. represent-ed. A number of major lakes la-kes and waterways in the eight are not even mentioned, mention-ed, and the magnificent boating waters of western Montana and Colorado are not even touched upon. Also, Al-so, most of the articles are the products of enthusiastic amateurs, whose skills as writers and photographers often fall short of the overall ov-erall quality of the book. "TrailerboatsWest" would have been far better still had the editors of SEA solicited so-licited and bought articles only from professional writers wri-ters and photographers and the more gifted amateurs. Despite these two limitations, limita-tions, however, the book is well worth its $7.95 price to trailerboaters. The volume vol-ume may be ordered through book stores or directly di-rectly from Miller Freeman Publications, 500 Howard Street, San Francisco, California Cali-fornia 94105. |
