Show GOP Sweeps National Election Scene; Rampton Wins Big Third Term in Utah And Newell, Taylor win County Seats Grand County voters followed fol-lowed national and statewide trends Tuesday and supported support-ed rejections for President Richard M. Nixon and his running mate, Spiro Agnew; and Gov. Calvin L. Ramptori. Governor Rampton, a Democrat, Demo-crat, has become the first man in the history of Utah politics to win a third term as chief executive of the State. His total in Grand County was 1,570, compared to 973 for his Republican opponent, Nicholas G. Strike. Governor Rampton won by better than two to one statewide. Totals in the presidential race in Grand County, were 1,830 for the President; and 557 for Senator George McGovern. Grand County voters gave a slight edge to Republican Robert K. Wolthuis, who was running for Congress against incumbent Gunn McKay. Mr. McKay, however, was successful suc-cessful district-wide in his bid for reelection. Local voters vo-ters also favored the candidacy candi-dacy of William Dunn over Clyde L. Miller for secretary secre-tary of state, but Mr. Miller Mil-ler won the race by a narrow nar-row margin. Voters locally supported heavily the candidacies of local lo-cal legislative candidates. In the race for State Senator, Lester W. Rogers, Republican Republi-can polled a total of 1,619 to 841 for Sen. Omar Bunnell. Sen. Bunnell, however, won the seat with a large vote margin in his own Carbon Co. In the race for State Senator, the totals were: Rogers-Grand Rogers-Grand County 1,619; SanJuan County 1,295; Emery County 954; Carbon County 1,650; total 5,518. Bunnell--Grand County 841; San Juan County 1,804; Emery lm458; Carbon 5,695; total 9,078. In the race for State Representative, Re-presentative, Rep. Kenneth Silliman, Green River, came out victorious in a district composed of Grand, Emery and part of Carbon County, over his opponent, John Garr, Dragerton. The totals were; Silliman: Grand 1,580; Emery 1,386; Carbon 176; total 3,142. Garr: Grand 840; Emery Em-ery 1,122; Carbon 545; total 2,507. Grand County's voters elected two Republicans to the County Commission by wide margins. Republican George H. (Hub) Newell was victorious victor-ious in the race for the four-year four-year term over his opponent Dwain Barker. The totals were Newell, 1,700; Barker 766. In the race for two year county commission, Republican Republi-can D. L. Taylor won over his opponent William H. (Bill) Hance by a vote of 1,782 to 723. The two men will replace two retiring county commis-Hey commis-Hey are chairman Mars Pope and Ralph J. Miller, Sr., who are retiring. In a local school board contest con-test in District 5, incumbent Les Graves defeated his opponent, op-ponent, Mrs. Dixie Barker, by a vote of 357 to 144. Board President Sam Taylor, running unopposed in District 4, polled 341 votes. For Article No. 1, Legislative Article Revision, the total was 1,291 for and 885 against. Proposition No. 2, Restricting Bail in Certain Cer-tain Felony Cases, 1,677 for and 650 against. The four proposals also passed the approval of voters statewide, having received re-ceived only token opposition during the campaign. Judge Edward Sheya, running run-ning for reelection as District Judge, gained the approval of Grand County voters by a total of 1,311 to 945 for his opponent, District Attorney Boyd Bunnell. The Judge also won district wide, with a total of 6,805 to 6,256 for Bunnell. |
