Show Hidden Anger Can Put You in the Hospital Many people are angry today. They are frustrated by their job situations, prices, and a feeling they have failed. Wherever the feelings come from, keeping them inside can make us sick. Unexpressed angry feelings often come out in a variety of ways. Some common ones are pouting, depression, hostility, accidents, drinking or loss of interest in sex. Or they may be expressed passively by withholding with-holding love, not keeping up responsibilities at home, spending excessively, etc. Also many illnesses are caused by hiding feelings and others are made worse for the same reasons. Among some suspected emotionally based illnesses are headaches, ulcers, ul-cers, colitis and constipation, obesity, rashes, back aches, etc. Often the line between physical and emotionally based bas-ed illness is vague and difficult to determine. Tension, sleeplessness and sweaty palms are other signs our bodies make to show we are hiding emotion. Someone in your family may be having these feelings right now. If so, expect them to be hard to live with. They may be having a hard time coping with anger, frustration and worry. Recognize problems together, togeth-er, then you can act constructively. construc-tively. Together you can take a new look at your goals. If you need help, don't be ashamed to admit it, everyone needs help at sometime in their lives. Darrell L. Peck, ACSW MENTAL HEALTH |
