FJlmh A new sports phenomena, the Utah State High School Wrestling Championships for 2-A schools visits Moab this Friday and Saturday, with a host of grapplers and avid fans expected to be on hand. Time was when the state mat meet was a ho-hum affair for all but the dedicated and small number of fans who ' followed the sport. No longer is such the case. Moab got a taste of what the meet means seven years ago when merchants mer-chants and motel operators got a pleasant surprise in the person of several hundred Vernal rooters who showed up to cheer their Utes on to victory. This year, two-time winner Delta is expected to bring the most fans," but such is the growing popularity of the sport that a half dozen schools expect large followings. The 1975 meet in Heber City drew 4,415 fans for the four sessions over two days. Ninety-six wrestlers from sixteen schools and their attendent coaches, managers and cheerleaders will be here. That, in itself, is a nice community boost at a time of the year when tourism is anything but at its peak. The first session begins Friday at 1 p.m. Forty-eight matches will be held in that session. The same number of matches is slated for the second session at 7 p.m. Friday. The same times will apply for the third and fourth sessions Saturday, with 24 semi-final and championship matches on tap. That's 144 matches total. Meet Director Glen Riche-son Riche-son said that admissions will be two dollars for adults and one dollar for students with cards to each of the sessions. Delta has about been conceded another title by this Region (7). However, Region Nine powers Morgan, Inter-mountain, Inter-mountain, Wasatch and Union could change that picture drastically either by themselves them-selves or by opening the door for some other teams. South Sevier and Millard from Delta's own region will enter two champions from the region meet each and both have six other men who qualified. San Juan too is a threat. The Broncos put eleven men into the state meet, second only to Delta with 12. The edge to the Rabbits is on the basis of eight region champs going to the mat. Five men in each weight qualified from Region Seven and three from each weight in the smaller Region Nine. Host Moab has three wrestlers, Klint Hutton, Jerry Stocks and Dave Wyatt competing, and every one of the sixteen 2-A schools has at least one. |
