Show 0 Spotlight on Sports By Don Robinson It's been a long dry spell on the high school sports scene, but activity finally resumes this week. Golf and baseball are now underway and the first track meet is only a week away. The time between the end of the basketball season and th advent of spring competition would not have seemed so long had it not been for the incredible weather we have had. Normally the players and runners are waiting for decent weather to get outside. out-side. This year they had to avoid the boredom of all practice and no play. Coach Ward Curtis learned last week that the new pitching machine given to the school by the Booster Club has a good swing to go with a good arm. He got decked by the mechanical marvel while making adjustments. adjust-ments. The machine really wings the ball and with its swing commands a lot more respect now. Some of the language of sports is changing. Coaches don't tab a player as a real good jumper anymore. Too many players are jumping from league to league and college to pro. The term now has a bad sound. Remember Rem-ember the college coaches who boosted their stars witK-the witK-the proclamation that "he could make it in the pros right now". With the theft of underclassmen of the college campus by the pros you don't hear that horn sound any more. Once upon a time there was lots of talk about how sports build character. I can even remember re-member when a contract was something both parties honored, even when it was nothing more than a handshake. hand-shake. Leo Duroucher said "Nice guys finish last". Now they finish the year with the team with which they started. Track coach, Del Ford is toying with the idea of entering en-tering Moab senior, Danny Robinson, in the BYU all-around all-around competition. Moab has never entered anyone before and it would be the start of a fine new tradition. Robinson is nursing a sore ankle, but has enough good marks to be competitive. The competitors compete in nine events over a two day span and is is considered the most gruelling test of the year. i |
