June 15, and the budget under review will include funds to provide for an overall teacher salary increase totaling near 12 per cent, it was announced this week by Superintendent of Schools Bill B. Mcador. The basic, across-the-board increase for staff members in the District this year is 7 per cent. Mr. Mcador stated. And in a preliminary listing of settlements statew ide. Grand had settled for a higher figure than any of the other 7 districts w hich settled earlier. Mr. Meador stated that Grand District has been slowly climbing back up in the statewide list of salaries paid to teachers. A few years ago. following financial difficulties in the local district. Grand teachers ranked 39th out of 40 districts in Utah as far as salaries were concerned. Last year, however, following some large percentage increases, the District ranked 28th out of 40 districts, and this year's increase should move the District a few more notches, he stated. With an over-abundance of teachers on the job market. Grand's comparative ranking has not hurt much the past few years, he said, because many applications applica-tions were available for every job opening. As the availability of teachers tightens, however, it will become more difficult to attract teaching personnel to isolated school districts unless they have a competitive salary schedule. Meador sa.J. Following the adoption of a salary schedule for the new school year, contracts have been issued to teachers, the Superintendent stated.
