Show Conference Studies State Of Utah Judiciary The third statutory Utah Judicial Conference was held Nov. 6-8 in the Salt Lake Hilton, with judges from the various courts and others meeting to discuss problems and issues currently facing the judiciary. The Utah Judicial Council, District, Juvenile and City Judges, representatives of the Justice of the Peace courts, the Judical Council Advisory Committee, Com-mittee, Juvenile Court Advisory Advis-ory Committee and staff members of both the Utah Court Administrator's and Juvenile Court Administrator's Administrat-or's offices met in separate and general sessions at the 3-day conclave. Gov. Calvin L. Rampton, speaking to the group at the Governor's Luncheon Nov. 7, said he felt the state budget could accommodate the addition addit-ion of two District Judges and supporting staff in areas where the case load has become critically high, but that the addition of four judges, as requested by Court Administrator Richard Peay, was out of the question presently, in his opinion. Seventh Judicial District Judge Edward Sheya. also 2-ycar president of the District Judges' Association, told the convention later the additional Jl 10.000 needed to provide four new District Judges is merely a drop in the bucket in comparison to the total Utah budget, and that the need for the additional judges outweighs out-weighs the cost factor when the delivery of prompt and fair i justice is taken into considerat- f ion. Undue delays in bringing cases to court, he pointed out, does not enhance the quality of justice. Two local people participated participat-ed in the conference. Moab City Judge Don Crist attended meetings of the Utah City Judges Association and general gener-al conference sessions. Among other things, the City Judges are working to provide legislation legis-lation enabling City Court judges in first and second class cities to have the sole right to appoint the city court adminis- trator. Adrien Taylor, a member of the Judicial Council Advisory Committee, attended the conference, con-ference, participating in joint meetings between the committee commit-tee and the Judicial Council, the Juvenile Court Advisory Committee and other conference confer-ence sessions and activities. The Advisory Committee has been in the process of formulating goals, which were presented to the general session Nov. 8, outline areas in which the committee feels it can act to benefit the judiciary. |
