Show ; he can't be serious - Governor Calvin L. Rampton is to be commended for . his speedy action in meeting with National Park Service ; Director George Hartzog relative to speedy consideration of ; an entrance road to the Needles section of Canyonlands Na- - tional Park. His position in urging that the shorter route , north of Elephant Hill, rather than the lengthy "back-door" . route now under consideration by the NPS, is a welcome ; boost to those of us who have advocated the shorter more ; direct route during the past year. ; We were surprised in this week's account of the Wash- ington meeting, of Director Hartzog's suggestion that an . aerial tramway might be used to cross the "Elephant Barrier " . 'rather than construction of a road. If we're talking about : scars on the landscape, he can't possibly be serious. Anyone - who has seen the steel towers and stretched cables of var-. var-. .ous tramways in the mountain states, knows that these fea-. fea-. lures dommate the landscape. Certainly a modest, well plan-. plan-. ned paved road would be much more kind to the scenic val-; val-; ucs in Canyonlands. |
