Show Community Comments One of the saddest commentaries on the current controversy over conditions on the Geyser Pass road on the LaSal Mountains, is that over the long years, so little has been done on road improvements on the LaSals. We traveled the only good road on the mountain moun-tain last weekend. That was the Loop Road, from Castle Valley to the Warner War-ner turnoff, and it was a real pleasure. Unfortunately, Unfortu-nately, that's where it ends. From the Warner turnoff on down Brum-ley Brum-ley Ridge to Pack Creek, the road is very much the same as it was two decades ago rough. The Geyser road, in 1 particular, has been one that has not only not improved, but deteriorated. deterior-ated. In the late 1930's, this writer traveled the road all the way from Warner to Blue Lake on the hood of a 1936 Ford truck to listen to a Joe Louis fight on the radio. The road was in better shape then than it has been the past few years, probably due to the consistent con-sistent pressure from sawmill operators who worked the Geyser Pass area during the late 1930's. It may be unfair to say, as some have, that federal agencies oftentimes often-times allow roads to deteriorate de-teriorate to discourage traffic into near-primitive areas. It must be accepted, however, that the Department of Agriculture's Agri-culture's .emphasis on improvement and upkeep of mountain roads has been going from bad to worse. It must also be accepted that much of the really meaningful work done on Forest Road improvements in the past few years, has been done in cooperation with county crews, equipment, and utilizing considerable, county monies. --s.it-- |
