Show j B.D11 FLASHES by Jim Abplanalp MINERS TOP RICHFIELD i IN TOURNEY OPENER! j Bingham's fighting Miners I blasted the tourney hopes of a i gallant, red hot crew from Rich field, in their first day's play in ! the colorful '51 B hoop classic. The Miners had to come from behind to snatch the hard earned earn-ed win, in the last minute of play, after trailing behind nearly near-ly all the way. j In the first quarter, the locals found a lid on the nets and scored scor-ed only one fielder to trail 4 to 14. A furious scoring burst just i before the half ended brought I the Miners to within two points, and from then on, the locals battled bat-tled to whittle away the narrow j lead. A foul toss by Ed Gayth- ; waite knotted the count at 48 all ' with just a minute left, and then i an interception by Gaythwaite ! and a pass to Bob Sanchez, alone ! under the hoop, was dunked for the final score and Bingham's ! first tourney win 50 to 48. Richfield, with over 60 shoot ing from the field, was perhaps ! the hottest team in this line that the fans have ever seen, and deserve de-serve a lot of credit for a fine game. The Miners play the biggest team in the tourney Thursday night. Moab, with three or four men up in the stratosphere of 6 foot 4 and 5 inches will be a power to cope with, and the Miners will need all their ability to cop victory No. 2. The tourney favorite, American Ameri-can Fork, had a rough time in their opener, against the Cyprus Pirates, but drew away to a comfortable 33 to 18 win, to stamp themselves as the chief contender for the laurels. BDAA League Results Copperton clinched top honors in the 1951 BDAA basketball race this week with a pair of wins, to keep an unblemished record of 9 wins, no losses. Last Friday night the leaders had their toughest game, and barely eked out a 38 to 37 win over a fighting West Jordan five. Groves of the winners, and Ho-gan Ho-gan ot Chick's, each scored 15, to provide the offensive punch of this nip and tuck scramble. Chick's led by one point and controlled the ball in the last minute, only to have the Cop-, Cop-, perton crew intercept a short pass and Buckle alone under the net, dunked the needed set-up, a second before the final buzzer. The Redskins and Frogtown put on another see-saw affair that was in doubt till the end. The Knights of Frogtown pulled pull-ed away with a 44-40 verdict in the final minute. Herbert, short jump-shot artist of the Redmen, burned up the nets for 24 points, a season high for individual scoring. scor-ing. R. Montoya garnered 13, to lead the winners. Big Four defeated Chick's of West Jordan 35 to 29 to gain possession of second place. Our apologies to the Big Four squad; we tated earlier that these boys lost to West Jordan, on the 4th night of play, but it was just opposite. Big Four now has 6 wins, 3 losses. Next Monday will wind up the '51 BDAA hoop league with the winning Copperton crew against the Redskins at 7:00 p.m.; Frogtown Frog-town battles Big Four at 8, and Chick's play Highland Boy at 9:00.
