Show tt I A. A By fly Mil MuI I have a n deep appreciation for people who vho start things Meaning of course ourse people who start worthwhile things that benefit other people and that carr carry on through the years I like Ilka to find out who started such thing as the newspaper who started the telephone company who In Incorporated In In- Incorporated the town tow n o 0 of f Moab The three firsts mentioned above were started by the same man and Is each a n going Institution institution institution today and each having played a great part pint In the development development development de de- of this area That man deserves more than the th mere mee mention we wilt will be able to give In this short column I I give you Justus N. N Corbin 1923 1858 who I shall refer to as Southeastern Utah's Number One Starter Back around the installation of telephone service to this area was even more important to citizens than the more recent Improvements tod today It gave a contact to the outside world and messages no longer had to tobe tobe tobe be carried horseback In 1896 J. J N. N Corbin decided that Grand Valley needed a voice of the people whereupon he established the Grand Valley Valley Valley Val Val- ley Times with three fonts of type and a Washington hand press A meager start Yes but butone butone one ono that developed Into a modem modern newspaper plant as did the telephone company develop Into one on of the most modern modem Independent plants In the country J. J N N. was a man I would liked to have known because we can well imagine that he was a man of deep convictions he was undoubtedly much criticised crit crit- for his ambitious nature but he overcame obstacles that we know little about today To put in telephone lines it was with the sweat of the brow He lie did It To publish a newspaper he set the type and turned off oft 50 copies per hour with the hand press Mr l Corbin was the first Grand County Attorney At about that time he saw the need for tor a doctor in the community com com- community so he went and got one He lie brought to the town Dr J. J W. W Williams who figures without with with- out parallel in the medical history history his his- tory of Utah Today as In the pioneering days Taj we have such people as J. J N. N Corbin but their perhaps come with out so much effort or elbow grease Nevertheless there are many who deserve our tion There are those who deserve deserve deserve de de- de- de serve a few tew kind words words how how many men are we indebted to to say well wel done We can be pretty sure that river bridges and good roads dont don't just happen We know that hospitals and schools and churches wont won't come to us without some person or persons persons persons per per- sons being a starter without with out effort without plugging and plugging away for a cause and without in most cases ridicule Let us salute J. J N. N Corbin for being the leader and the starter he h. was but at the same time let us UI salute those who carried on through the years what he started Were We're thinking that if it J. J N. N Corbin could see the Telephone Company today If it he could see the newspaper and If Jf he could see the town as a whole he would say only one thing Well done fellers keep fellers-keep keep going go go- ing |
