Show Uranium rn Days Big 89 Success Moab's 1959 1059 Uranium Days celebration was dubbed one of the most successful community celebrations In history by of officials officials I- I dais and participants alike this week The two-day two celebration began with a parade Friday evening leading the way to theban the ball ban field where the Champion Elks softball team successfully defended their title against a team elm of all nIl Activity on Center street streel began began began be be- gan early Saturday morning with concession booths op opening to begin a full day of operation I Highlight of the morning was the breakfast booth operated by bythe bythe bythe the chamber of commerce commerce on the corner of Main and C Center streets One of the most colorful and elaborate parades in Moab's history history history his his- tory began at 2 pm p.m. with floats assembled from many organIzations organizations organizations or or- and businesses L' L In lr Inthe the community The parade was led by the stepping high-stepping Moab high school band and Grand Valley Riders First pl place ce winner wiMer In the most original float c category was entered entered en en- by Alpha Epsilon h soror- soror ily ity second place winner In sotor-I sotor the same was entered by the Arches Gem and Mineral Miner l club and third place went to the Newcomers club Two other categories were commercial with first place goIng going going go go- ing to the Alice lIce Jo shop second place to Uranium Reduction Co and third place place to the Moab Co The Moab Second Ward took first place In the non commercial category followed fol fol- fol l lowed w d by the Community Baptist church in second place and the girl scouts in third place Prizes for the best decorated booth were also given with Beta Beta Be Be- e. e ta Sigma Phi sorority first the Lions club second and St. St Pius Catholic church In third place A barbeque held on the courthouse courthouse court court- house lawn drew a ge crowd Saturday evening beginning at It was followed bya by a very professional type talent i show at top honors In the talent show was popular singer Ronnie Ronne Behunin followed closely clos cbs ely by Helen Palmer In second with a yodeling act and Patsy Hunt a singer accompanied by her father on the guitar In third A wide selection of other popular popular lar bar numbers brought ap applause laus from the the large ge cro crowd d which had assembled on the Ule courthouse lawn F F. M was master of ceremonies The crowning of the 1959 Uranium Days Days' Queen climaxed the evenings evening's program Miss MIsi Sherry Stalcup received top honors and was awarded her crown of office She was sponsored spon spon- cored by the Order of Eastern Star Her lIer attendants were Miss Karen Miss Karen Sue McGowan and Miss Julie Wil son A large crowd attended the Uranium Days dance held at at the RoU Roller r Rink JUnk |
