W Williams Lt Williams was recognized as one of the Army's most daring and skillful pilots He lie was one of the famous Three Musketeers At the time he was killed he was competing in the national air races at Mines Field Los Angeles California Lt Williams distinguished himself from the beginning of his army life at West Point where he was graduated with honors Choosing aviation for his army career and after training at Kelly and Brooks fields soon proved the excellence of his ability as a pilot In addition he became became became be be- came a machine gunner being awarded a medal by the assistant secretary of war and classed as a distinguished aerial gunner gunner gunner gun gun- ner a rank held by only two other aviators in the U U.
