D Clyde This week is being observed as National Library Week across across' the nation It Is particularly fitting fitting fitting fit fit- ting that Utah place special en emphasis emphasis em- em on this observance because because be be- cause for the first time Utah has a State Library Utah people from the beginnings beginnings beginnings begin begin- of our history have prided themselves on their devotion to learning and love of good books Books occupied precious space in inthe inthe inthe the covered wagons that crossed the plains and mountains In 1847 and in the critical years immediately immediately immediately following when every Inch of space and every ounce of I weight was at a premi premium m. m The pioneers built and operated a a school in Salt Lake Valley as soon as they had attended to the first priority construction of ofa a fort for community defense and a place of worship In light of our historical heritage heritage heritage her her- It was ironic that Utah should end up with the dubious distinction of being the last of the forty-eight forty states to establish establish establish est est- est est- a State Library This defect defect defect de de- was remedied however by bythe bythe bythe the 1957 Utah Legislature and it gave me real pride and pleasure pleas pleas- ure to sign into law S. S B. B 86 of the Legislature establishing establishing establishing lishing the Utah State Library Starting from scratch and with so much to be e done with limited funds our new State Library Library Li Li- Li- Li Commission has been forced forced forced forc forc- ed to proceed with care and caution but a great deal has been accomplished in the last year Russell L. L Davis a trained and ande e experienced librarian has been named director of the State Library Li- Li Li LI- With a staff stuff composed of Robert Hartshorn assistant director director director dir dir- ector Cathryn Weeks Donna Huber and lone hone Andrus he Is making real progress Already the State Library has hason hason hason on order more than books and they are being rapidly processed processed processed pro pro- and catalogued A bookmobile bookmobile book book- mobile Is on order and scheduled scheduled scheduled sched sched- for delivery In May The bookmobile will have a capacity of books In the beginning at least will be used primarily for demonstration purposes In rural areas The following services are already ale al- al already ready avail available ble through the tho state library Extension service for consultation on library problems pro the state staff has hils al already already al al- ready aided Morgan county to set up its new library and is isar ar ar arranging ranging to give help to other areas areas In the the state Book loans to aid libraries with small book budgets A limited amount of reference reference reference re re- re- re ference help Objectives for the immediate future are the operation of the bookmobile expansion of the present reference service and the acquisition of more books for circulation In providing reference reference reference refer refer- ence service existing facilities facilities- the libraries of the University of Utah Utah State University in Logan the Salt Lake City ary and other large existing in institutions institutions institutions in- in will be utilized There is no plan to duplicate services services services ser ser- ser ser- vices already available but the State Library will act as a coordinating coordinating coordinating co co- co- co agency for libraries throughout the state I In acquiring books the State Library Is placing major emI em- em I on popular non-fiction non I with some fiction and a limited I number of technical books There will be no effort to duplicate I the technical libraries of the universities unI universities un un- I and other institutions I Individuals living In Utah areas 1 I where local library service is not available can even now obI obtain ob- ob j I tain books and reference help from the State Library by writing writing writ- writ ing to the State Librarian at the i State Fair Grounds Salt Lake LakeI I City Utah where temporary headquarters have been Available books can be bc mailed to individuals Members of the State Library Commission are arc Guy N.
