Show w wit sn k Eleanor Roosevelt GIRL SCOUT EI CA ENCAMPMENT We had a lovely drive one day The roads through the Berksh res are always pleasant and not too frequented The Western Hems sphere G rl Scout Encampment near Ot s Mass is s on a alake alake alake lake w th plenty of trees to shade shad I the tents and cabins When we ve ar arI arrived arrived arrived rived the girls represent ng 24 states and 16 countries greeted us through three of the r t ves yes and then everyone passed by and shook hands After th s we started an inspection tion of the th whole camp which meant walking for nearly an hour and a ahalt half a pleasant act vity after the thelong thelong thelong long drive My cousin Mrs Irs Lyman Delano went w th me which made the whole day especially enjoyable She recently resigned as chairman of the commIttee which arranges for these international encampments but she IS st U ll vice cha and has a keen interest in scouting M Ms friends Mrs Arthur Choate and Mrs Frederick Brooke were both there and I saw many other familiar faces PLENTY TY OF I Craft work is carried on in m all the tents and the girls do a great deal of sw mm ng boat ng and hiking I thought it at particularly good tl ti at each un t cooked at least one meal meala a day and ate it m their own OVIl open a r d n ng room for this gives a chance for familiarity w th outdoor cooking cond tons t ons The girls who I 1 ve ye m in what they call the ted forest which is a lovely grove of hemlock trees some d stance from the main mam bu Id ld ng cook their own breakfast and supper Camp Brae has a stable and a number of horses with a very able teacher m in attendance I think th s is the only Girl Scout camp I have ever visited where the gIrls could learn to ride It has proved so popular that nearly a hundred girls s fined up for tor this particular activIty None of them have had as many hours on horseback as would be re qu red for really adequate training but most of 01 them have learned something about the handling and care of horses a very good founds t on on which to build for tor future pWe pWe p pWe We all aU lunched together in m the main mam building and I was glad to see again agam Mrs Leigh White from Eng England England England land who has visited many of the theother theother theother other countries m in this hemIsphere since we met last year Ma Maj or Put Putnam Putnam Putnam nam of Springfield Mass was very kind and drove Mrs Delano and me meto meto meto to the city while a state trooper drove my car At the broadcasting station I was presented w th a beau beautiful beautiful t ul wooden key to the city I took part m in the broadcast which went out to the other groups of Girl Scouts throughout the country and which I think was later repeated to South and Central Amer Arner can coun countries countries countries tries The drive home into a most beau beautiful beautiful sunset sky was unforgettable I arrived a little after e a some somewhat somewhat somewhat what weary but very happy to have taken part m this on PLEASANT VISIT When I reached Hyde Park one evening I found Mrs Dorothy Roosevelt and her youngest daugh daughter daughter daughter ter Janet had driven from Ver Vermont Vermont Vermont mont to spend the night with us They had visited the 1 and had hada hada a swim swum in spite of 01 the chilly weather weather weather er which persisted through th s week We talked all evening Next morn morning morning mg ing m In spite of 01 the rain ram I sent my little niece DIece over to the stables to try to get a ride for she is very fond of horses They left us at noon to take a plane back to De Detroit Mich Again Agam we had to sh ft a party o or er erto erto erto to the big house wh ch I had bad planned to have out of doors it it th the cottage thi-cottage cottage The rainy ramy weather s ma maing maing maing ing this a habit with us This party was given by a group of Democrat t workers in honor of Mrs Ed yard vard Conger who has been vice pres dent of 01 our Democratic county comm tte for a long while She has given active and devoted service not only do ng work here hert herein herem m in this county but being called upon often to speak m in nearby co nt e and to help with organization Mrs Conger has many loyal friends anc ancs ancs ancs s nce nee she feels she must res be because because because cause of ill Iii health we felt Celt v we e want wanted wanted wanted ed to do something to st st-o st Your v our appreciatIon of her services The party was a great success and andI andI andI I hope she enjoyed it as
