Show bever and curtis again head ticket herbert hoover was for president of the united states at the republican national convention in chicago today charles curtis of kansas was again chosen for vice president the nomination of president hoover was made by the unanimous vote of the convention this forenoon A contest arose over the selection of a nominee for vice president eight names being presented to the convention vice president curtis was selected on the first ballot his vote being 34 3 4 to 34 3 4 for hanford of iowa his closest opponent charles dawes of chicago was not a candidate although he received votes from several delegations the big fight of the convention occurred last night over the prohibition question after wrangling for many hours over a plank pledging the party for a modification of the liquor laws as opposed to an out and out referendum on a repeal of the eighteenth amendment the semi wets won out by a close vote the plank as adopted authorizes constitutional conventions in each state to consider a chare in the liquor amendment and also pledges the protection of the federal government to those states which wish to remain dry |
