Show legislature MOKE WORK PENDING THAN IT CAN TAKE CARE OF IN REMAINDER OF TERM already faced with more work than they can possibly take care of in the remaining twenty one days of the cession both utah legislative bodies are on their last week for regular introduction of bills friday Is the fortieth day of the session and thereafter bills cannot be introduced without unanimous consent up to monday of this week there had been bills and 33 resolutions and memorials introduced in both houses which Is actually more measures than found their way into the legislature two years ago during the entire session in addition the calendars of both houses are crowded to I 1 capacity and a wholesale slaughter of bills Is predicted for the last few days of the session nine measures so tar have been approved by both houses and sent to governor george H dem and of these nine only seven have been signed these seven include the 50 appropriation for legislative expense ft bill giving the federal government some land tor establishment of the bear alver migratory bird refuge a resolution urging the appointment oi louis B gates as secretary of the interior and a memorial to congress requesting a higher on the beet sugar industry the important appropriation me sure for expense of state administration and legislative action on boulder dam are as yet virtually untouched the utah delegation to the santa fe conference returned this week however and it is probable steps on the colorado river problem will immediately follow their report passage by the lower house of representative 8 M jorgensenn Jorgen sens proposed constitutional amendment to create an equalizing fund for school purposes was the outstanding action last week As amended the resolution provides that a fund equal to from to per school child be proved pd for distribution by the legislature in addition to the state school fund of 25 per capita passage of this measure was fraught v ith much contention and although virtually all of the representatives agreed to the advisability of such legislation many argued that the amount specified was too high to be approved w the voters in the event it passes the senate after passing senator 0 R hol ng bill providing for a head ballot for the judiciary the senate abent much of its time last week clearing out dead timber from the existing statutes six measures recommended by the state code commission all repealing outgrown or useless statutes passed in rapid succession and were forwarded to the house A dozen more such measures were introduced during the week and about twenty more are expected before the session ends the senate rescinded its previous action on senator herbert B maws bill to increase the power of mayors in cities of the first and second class and voted to put it back in its regular position on the calendar it will probably be considered this week aft both houses plan to adjourn fridia for washington s birthday and will probably not return again until r following monday then they will swing into the final twenty days ot the session |
