Show coal COMPANY TAXES REDUCED BY the board of county commissioners met in regular monthly session monday with commissioners don taylor A M robertson and buchanan clerk H W balsley attorney thomson and treasurer H S rutledge present F bauer president of the chesterfield ter field coal company with R M mcgraw general manager and J H barrett Oar rett attorney met with the board in behalf of the chesterfield company s petition for an adjustment of back taxes owed the county A computation showed that the company owed in taxes and interest the sum of this amount including its taxes for the years and 1928 A letter from the state board of equalization gave the commissioners the power to reconvene as a county board of equalization to consider the matter the letter also suggested that the county board look carefully into the profit and loss sheet of the company to determine to what extent the taxes should be reduced bauer mcgraw and garrett represented that the chesterfield company has operated at a heavy loss during recent years and that unless there Is a material reduction in its overhead the company will have to close its mines at sego they represented that the company lost something in excess of last year in view of the fact that the sego coal industry means much to grand county and since it was evident that the chesterfield company must have some relief in order to continue operations erat ions the commissioners were sympathetic to the request for a reduction it was decided to accept the sum of in full payment of the back taxes with the understanding that to the future the current taxes will be paid when due other than ordering the reduction in the company s taxes no business of any importance was transacted at the meeting |
