Show when are we going to organize a chamber of commerce at moab why delay a move that would result in so much benefit to the town and county it seems that a choice assortment of crooks manage to get into public office up at salt lake city first it was the county treasurers treasur ers office that became involved in scandal with defalla sion the part of the treasurer running into many thousands of dollars then the deputy state treasurer embezzled over L and now the city treasurers treasur ers office is short a sum that will ex P aeed probably there would be more defalcations if there were more public treasuries to loot in the capital city all of which is rather expensive for the surety companies and poor advertising for the city of salt lake and state of utah in a few days the eighteenth legislative assembly of the state of utah will pass into a history the session has accomplished a great deal more in beneficial legislation than was at first thought that it would accomplish most of the radical measures which threatened to disrupt the state and put a number of industries out of business have been killed some good laws have been passed and many conflicting dead timber statutes have been repealed probably the most important act of the legislature was the approval of the boulder dam six state compact which makes it possible to stait construction of the colorado river development project whether or not the states approval of the pact was the best thing for utah is still a matter for debate the legislature has refused to make any radical changes in our system of taxation for which most of the taxpayers of the state are probably thankful all in all the eighteenth legislature could have been a lot worse A bill is pending before the legislature which makes it mandatory for counties school districts and cities to publish each month all public expenditures and the provisions of all contracts affecting public funds tahe measure known as fry bill no 59 passed the house by a vote of 36 to 15 and is now pending before the senate in the house one of its leading champions was representative W D hammond of grand county who called attention to the recent disclosures made at salt lake city where state county and city treasuries have been looted the purpose of the bill he said was to keep the public fully informed as to money was being expended certainly the taxpayer has tHe ghEo know this and we cannot understand why any person could object to such publications the neighboring states of colorado new mexico and idaho all have similar measures so it cannot be asserted that the proposed law is simply a move to benefit the newspapers of the state H whether one is a believer in national prohibition or not he will recognize much truth in the following which is a denver preachers definition of the prohibitionist preachers creed 1 I believe in prohibition the father of all reforms the creator of peace prosperity and happiness apt to speak of bootleggers racketeers and hypocrites I 1 believe in the savior of boys and girls saving them the necessity of seeking a wine room by placing a flask on every hip 1 I believe in the anti saloon league which though it was conceived in honesty was born of fanaticism and has descended into the ambo of hypocrisy I 1 believe in congress as long as the anti saloon league and the christian temperance union may sit at his right hand to dictate the laws and rules by whick the morality of man shall be judged 1 I believe in the communion of saints that is to say all those who believe in prohibition all others will go to hell 1 believe in forgiving and pardoning all sinners and criminals except those that violate the prohibition laws let them be imprisoned for life and finally I 1 believe in one half of one per cent religion a religion of reform and persecution without one trace of dogma |
