Show legislature WILL INLESS CLOCK IS STOPPED SESSION WILL COME TO END THIS EVENING BILLS PASSED unless the traditional device of stopping the clock is resorted to the eighteenth session of the utah legislature will adjourn sin die this thursday evening at salt lake city today Is the sixtieth day of the session the maximum allowed under the constitution ution literally scores of bills will probably die on the last day of the session for lack of consideration in both houses during the week both houses have been holding night sessions in an effort to catch up with the ed work but there still remains a great grist of bills on the calendars awaiting action there Is considerable talk of holding a special session of the legislature later to enact new taxation laws to this end a bill has been introduced providing for the appointment of a tax commission to make a thorough survey of the situation and submit its findings to the legislature it the commission Is appointed governor dem will probably call the legislature in special session later representative jorgensenn Jorgen sens proposed amendment to the constitution providing tor a of property for tax purposes previously passed by the house failed of passage in the senate tuesday losing out by one vote it was one of the most important measures before the session and was the subject of heated debates in both houses for weeks outstanding in the lower house last week was the passage after heated debates of a bill outlining the utah state building program suggested by governor dern the measure calls for a 1500 bond issue to finance the first two years construction and suggests an expansion program of indeterminate length covering virtually every state institution the bill provides for the appointment of a state building commission the measure was considered by the state senate yesterday afternoon the bills proposing special excise taxes on tobacco chewing gum perfume cosmetics and hair dressings were dealt death blows in the house the representatives holding that excise taxes were an improper method of raising revenue the bill proposing a special tax on theater admission tickets also was killed the bills providing for junior colleges throughout the state were killed by the senate A measure of interest generally w S B no 10 by maw which requires the settlement of personal property taxes on automobiles before license plates may be obtained from the secretary of state this measure has passed both houses and win doubtless be signed by the governor A bill pro nosing to license motor vehicle drivers failed of passage in the house by a close vote A bill repealing the law prohibiting the advertising or displaying of tobacco passed the house and will probably also pass the senate A bill has passed both houses which exempts from jury service only those women who have the acthen care of minor children A bill has been passed by the house and senate of the utah legislature providing that settlement of personal property taxes on automobiles must be made before license plates may be obtained from the secretary of state the measure la now before governor dem tor his action it Is believed the enactment of this law will result in the collection of thousands of dollars in personal property taxes on cars which heretofore have escaped taxation tho bill provides that unless the owner of a car has real estate or gives a bond guaranteeing payment of his taxes he cannot secure his licenses plates |
