Show STRIKES WT GAS rocks mud and oil blown over derrick believed oil will be encountered in quantity when sand is drilled deeper the attention of the oil fraternity of the intermountain country Is now focused on the boulder knoll oil gas company s well eight miles southeast of monticello where a high pres sure flow of wet gas was encountered on top of the sand early monday morning rocks and mud were shot over the crown block and oil was sprayed over the derrick the pressure of the gas caused the well to bridge about feet oft bottom and as a result of the constant agitation of the gas feet of open hole below the casing is now bridged tightly with in spite of the bridge the well continues to make a heavy flow of gas the aas has a very high petroleum content which leads oil men to the belief that the sand when penetrated deeper with the drill will produce a commercial flow of oil the gas blow occurred at a depth of 2640 feet A lime shell cappock caprock was pierced on top of the sand and the drill had penetrated the about three inches when the gas flow came in tools were bounced up the hole but fortunately were recovered without damage after the initial blow an attempt was made to run the tools to bottom but they encountered a bridge about feet oft bottom efforts to drill out this bridge were unsuccessful as the constant agitation of the gas kept the open hole caving with the result that the well became bridged up to the casing shoe it is the intention of the drillars drillers dr to run feet of liner casing in the bottom of the hole to stop the cabins and make a test of the sand bert galloway president and manager of the boulder knoll company came to moab this morning to have some special tools made at the griffith machine shops he expects to return to the well this evening and the casing will probably be run tomorrow if all goes well the well can be drilled in within the next three or four days the initial flow of gas was estimated to be in excess of cubic feet and a considerable quantity of was blown out before the hole bridged at this time with the feet of onen hae filled with the well is making a flow of gas estimated at half a million feet the sound of the escaping gas can be heard at a considerable distance the high petroleum content of the aas ripps tenant to the belief that oil in quantity will be found when the sand Is opened up so tar no water whatever has made its appearance pe arance mr galloway while not attempting to overrate the importance of his discovery Is confident that production will be obtained with the drilling of a few more feet of hole the fact that some oil has already been in evidence added to the wet character of the gas makes the test assume a very interesting role and operations aurini the next week will be watched intently by oil men the boulder knoll oil gas company is composed of a group of eastern san annn county and illinois men most of ahm are ranchers mr galloway was the organizer of the com pany and has had charge of operas alons since the hole was studded in over a year ago in spite of limited finances mr galloway has kept steadily at the job of making hole confident that success would crown bis efforts the company has a standard rig and excellent equipment and the hole can be carried on to a considerably greater depth if necessary the sand has been found to be highly productive of oil in many sections of the west the closest production Is the boundary butte well of the continental oil company probably 30 south of the boulder knoll where a 50 barrel well was brought in several years ago but later cased off the boulder knoll structure Is said to be about three miles wide and she miles long much of the acreage located on the structure is patented land owned by dry farmers if the boulder knoll well comes in with a commercial flow of oil a great campaign of will doubtless be opened up to test the upper permian beds of the southeastern utah area eastern san juan county Is said to contain a number of likely looking structures where the Is within easy reach of the drill |
