Show cloudburst WRECKS VALLEY CITY DAM ROAD AND BRIDGES ARE WASHED OUT heaviest storm ever experienced here plays havoc loss to road system estimated at mail truck lost in flood torrential rains resulting in huge floods in practically every wash and creek in eastern utah played havoc with roads and bridges monday and tuesday p in grand county the principal damage centered around valley city on the moab thompsons road here the floods from thompsons Thomp sons and crescent washes poured such an immense volume of water into the valley city reservoir that the dam broke with tl e breaking of the levee a biall of water ten feet high swept down the valley lenng out the concrete highway bridge and washing away about a hundred yards of roadway the bridge across crescent wash about a mile north of valley city was also away with the breaking of tha valley city reservoir all traffic over the moab road had to ba suspended the dam broke monday morning and it was tuesday afternoon before mail or passengers geis could be transported from to moab it is possible imi to drive cars or trucks past valley city and all mail express and baggage are being carried on foot across the valley city wash the damage to the state road as a result of the flood at valley city is estimated at two new bridges will have to be built in addition to considerable grade the valley city wash which prior to the flood was only about ten feet wide is now of river proportions being about fifty yards wide and from ten to fifteen feet deep A long bridge similar to the one over courthouse wash west of courthouse sf tion will have to be built here the crescent bridge which was built at a cost of about will have to be replaced with la larger structure yesterday the state road commis sion instructed road agent C E bailey to put a large force of men at work to open up the road for traffic at once A temporary crossing will be provided and it is probable that the state will at once hae plans strawn for permanent bridges M L burdick owner of the valley city reservoir and ranch sustained heavy dam lages as a result of the flood the break in the dam is about 76 feet wide and the cost of closing the cut will probably amount to several thousand dollars A large arroyo was torn through the burdick ranch although the damage to crops was blight the losa thelmi pounded water was also a severe blow to mr burdick the reservoir in to providing water for irrigation of crops furnished a watering place for the burdick cattle traffic was temporarily halted on the moab monticello road as a result of the floods on tuesday morning victor bailey driver of a moab garage company mail truck attempted to get through to monticello with Q load of mail the truck became stalled in church rock wash about twenty miles north of monticello As mr bailey was attempting to get the truck out of the wash a flood came down sweeping the ma chine with its load of mail down the creek the driver barely had trine to extricate the the sacks of first and second class mail before the truck was carried away it was rolled down the wash a short distance where it lodged after the flood had run down the truck was recovered but it is almost a total loss some of the post was carried away tha protracted storm period culminating mina ting in the severe cloudbursts sunday land monday was one of the oniest severe ever in southeastern altah at moab the total precipitation waa 4 25 inches mon day nights storm dropped nearly two inches of water here railroad oves the D R G has been suspended during the past week with bridges washed away between green river and price last night a train was able to get through from the west for the first time in about four das and today normal transportation is being resumed the storm oenid nov appears to be passed and today the moab garage company is attempting to get its cars and trucks over the wrecked roads in an endeavor endea or to catch up with the accumulated loads of which hae been lying at terminals for several days it will probably be several days before traffic gets back to normal |
