Show FURTHER ATTEMPT TO TEST OIL FLOW OF SHAFER NO 1 WELL TO BE MADE swab to he run and oil permitted to flow into tanks if attempt fails drill will be sent deeper no 2 well down feet A further effort to test the production of the oil stratum encountered at 2028 feet in the john L shafer no 1 well which blew in on december 8 with a flow of oil estimated at from to barrels will be made friday or saturday of this week A swab will be run in the eight inch casing the oil will be allowed to flow into the tanks for a period long to test its production if the flow is of commercial size the oil stratum will be budded mudded off again the eight inch casing will be reset re set and cemented and the well will be put on production the oil to be used in further drilling operations if it is found that the heavy salt water and the tons of mud and cement which have stood on the sand for five months have forced back the oil to ewh an extent that the producing horizon cannot be developed in the no 1 well by swabbing then the oil stratum will be cei dented off and the drill will be sent down to explore the deeper sands of which at least three are within reach of the tools according to geologists this is the program which the midwest utah oil utah southern interests have decided on j following the unsuccessful attempts to secure a water shutoff shut off with six inch casing A specially constructed swab is expected to arrive today and i swabbing operations should be under 1 way or saturday the i six inch casing was pulled tuesday I 1 it was impossible to secure a shutoff with the small string above the oil horizon due to the cavity in the bottom of the hole caused by the drilling up of iron the drillars drillers dr illers believe however that the eight inch can be successfully set below the water stratum and above the producing bonzon and this will be done it it is found that the oil sand at 2028 feet can yet be developed in the no 1 well for five months the drilling crew on the shafer no I 1 have been wrestling with one of the most difficult undertakings der takings ever confronted in an oil well the well blew in unexpectedly n december 8 flowing by heads and the ng and derrick were burned down for weeks and weeks tons of mud were pumped into the hole under high pressure to deaden the flow of oil and permit the erection of a new rig and the setting of pipe at bottom when the new TIC was erected the well had quieted down sufficiently to enable the drillars drillers dr illers to under ream 58 feet of hole and set the 10 inch casing at 2026 feet the pipe was cemented and when drilling in started the 10 inch collapsed it then became necessary to sidetrack the collapsed pipe and the drilling up of iron occupied a months time eight inch pipe was then set but several cement jobs were unsuccessful it was then decided to run 6 inch with a packer and in drilling in the bottom to make a seat for alie packer iron was found A i weeks time was consumed in dall ing up this manenal attempts to se ure a shutoff shut off with the 6 inch likewise proved unavailing it is now the intention to swab the hole and attempt to make a test of the flow without having a water shutoff shut off if the oil flow comes in as expected then sufficient time will be taken to set and cement the 8 inch to save the production frockt the 2028 foot stratum whether or not the well has been able to withstand with sand the months of abuse and still bring in commercial production from the horizon at 2028 feet is a debatable question there is no doubt however that the sand at 2028 feet if it had been drilled in with a dry hole would have produced at least 1000 barrels daily oilmen are also certain that in the future wells to be drilled on cane creek structure the 2028 foot sand will prove to be a most profitable producer for several days after it blew in the shafer no 1 spouted by heads and after a control head had been placed on the 10 inch pipe oil flowed in a steady stream from between the 10 and 12 inch casing for three months the problem ahead of the wa to deaden the well and bring the oil flow under control so that operations could proceed after this result was finally accomplished shed the troubles with casing developed so that the well has been subjected to almost every conceivable kind of mistreatment in the meantime operations are proceeding very favorably at the no 2 well on the shafer dome five miles southwest of no 1 over feet of 15 inch hole were drilled the past week and a depth of feet has been reached the running 0 12 inch casing is now under way and the pipe will be cemented in to secure a shutoff shut off of surface water with a dry hole and a smaller string of tools much more rapid progress can be made it is expected that the 0 o 2 well will be down to the first horizon at 2300 feet by he middle of june the midwest utah southern interests are proceeding with their further drilling projects in the field proved by the no 1 gusher A location for a no 2 well on cane creek has been leveled off and a wharf is being constructed this location is about half a mile up the river from no 1 rigging up should start by next week snowden nys well on cane creek will soon be spud ding this well which will also be drilled by the midwest exploration is located about a mile east of no 1 district superintendent L L bechtel left friday for casper and will return in a few days G A smith field superintendent is in charge of operators opera tons at both camias additional drilling equipment for ahe midwest is arriving daily four steel derricks have reached the landing pier at moab and the moab garage company will start moving two of these down river in a few das it is understood |
