Show MRS MARIA DARROW MOAB PIONEER OF 86 PASSES TO owner of towns first hotel who crossed plains in 1818 dies at ripe old ARC age of 83 one of coabe revered pioneer women who took a leading part in III early community life passed away friday night when mr mrs mary A darrow aged 83 years died at the I 1 home of her daughter mr mrs C A ioven loven I oven ake att mrs darrow dm row had been a poor health for the pt peat year or mon mort cancer of the stomach being her ailment about two week weeks ago I 1 i her condition look took a critical turn I 1 ind death rel relieved leed her sufferings fril fri j act hy night grandma darrow had been a resi fee mil ident of moab moal for thirty eight year years j a for twenty years the she and husband of operated a hotel and store at this plat blaic e and she rho took an active part in W the towns affairs she enjoyed an extensive friendship throughout the nd rr date use alary Adel adeline lne darrow was bom at net nauvoo illinois on august 24 1811 the daughter of john D and agatha ez ann lep I ep when only eix six years of da alk go she accompanied her parent parents ret ohp plains to utah with one hi nt of the firt first hand cart comp companies anim ar riving at salt lake in 1848 1849 a year after the arrival of the first corn com na pany of pioneers the family first fettled at I 1 little ittle cottonwood cotton wood near salt lake A short time afterwards her parents were called upon by president brigham young to help colonize bouthern wi Rou thern utah and the fam ily moved to new harmony V washington lash county which community they helped to settle later they moved to utah where mrs dar row grew to womanhood mrs darrow married marcus henry darrow and after living for some time at panguitch the couple moved mooed to moab arming here in the year 1886 1986 mr and mrs darrow operated one of the first stores in moab and built the first hotel which become known mown throughout the state as a the darrow house grandma darrow darivs was a devout member of the L D S church and was tn in active religious worker she pave gave liberally of her time and funds for foche abe alleviating of sickness end tand digress during the trying pioneer times her husband died in 1912 since 4 which time she lived with her daughters grandma darrow was the f mother of thirteen children four boys nd and lane rane girls only five children all alli girls survive her they are mr mrs M X E higgins of california mrs helen D chase of seattle washington mrs dora holman of moab mn mrs margaret moore of paradox colorado and mrs nora Lol Loen andge dge of moab she is also survived r by twenty seven grandchildren i thirty great grandchildren and a W number of great great grandchildren three brothers and a sister also survive they are joseph lee of st george samuel and ezra lee of panguitch and mrs william prince of panguitch FUne funeral rall services were held sunday t from the ward meeting house which was crowded to its capacity by sorrowing relatives and friend friends the choir sang my father knew knows and though deepening wals after aich which the invocation waa was offered by alexander jameson the speakers ip eakers were W R mcconkie and bishop W D hammond mr mcconkle told of the long useful life of mr mrs darrow mentioning her ministration ministrations to the sick and ww needy many of the men and women now in moab remember with gratefulness ess he said the helpful services rendered by mrs darrow when they had suffered from bodily ailment ailments and when the services of a physician were not obtainable the speaker stated that mrs barrow had been a pioneer in every sense of the word having helped subdue the wilderness in the interest of the younger generations bishop hammond stated that mrs darrow had ian an abiding faith in the resurrection I 1 and an assurance that she would meet I 1 her loved once ones on the other side by I 1 reason of his hi ecclesiastical position bishop hammond had talked with her frequently on spiritual matters and mid she bad had no fear of the life to come she had been he said faithful in 60 he church duties paying her tithes and so long aa as she was physically able attending sacrament and other church meetings the choir sane sang till the resurrection Resurrect ioli day at after ter which the benediction was offered by bert allred at the cemetery the dedicatory prayer was pronounced by J P larsen and the choir sang rest on the hillside rest |
