Show BASEBALL PLAYGROUND by Bailey J. Santistevan, Area Director After about two weeks of hard hitting, running, and fielding the first quarter of baseball was completed with champions being announced in three leagues. The Senior league was taken by a well-balanced bunch of boys from Bingham who call themselves them-selves the Bow Sox's. Keeping this team hustling are managers, George Apostal, who has missed one day on our playground in the last four years, and Dick (picked off of first base) Roblez. In a close battle of the Junior league the Copperton Panthers edged the Copperfield Deputys by one game. These two teams along with the Bat Shiners and Golden Eagles play a good brand of ball as all the scores are close. Leslie Nichols is the big catcher on the Panthers squad and keeps his squad husting and on the park every morning. In the Popsicle league the Bingham Giants came through with a clean record, but were pushed by the Copperton Hawks who got a slow start. The Giants hit and fielded well with little Ruban Gallegos, Larry Mantle, Tony Montoya and Dallas Hak-anson Hak-anson carrying the brunt of the load. Another club in the Popsicle league which is not winning too many games but is in their pitching pitch-ing every day is the Elva Ruth club. Good looking ball players like George Sluga and the Abplanalp Ab-planalp boys keep this club playing play-ing every day. A new club on the playground this past week is led by Butch Tyson and Harold Yates. This club has started to play in the Senior league and has Ron and Ed Muhar, John Arritola, Tom Lovat, Dick Susaeta and Russ Oseguera to keep their attack going. Yesterday the playground took off a day from league competition competi-tion and a baseball school was conducted 'by supervisors, Santistevan San-tistevan and Dimas, with additional addi-tional help for the pitchers from Warren Sumnicht. This event has been adopted by our playground play-ground and will take place once a week. Another special event which will take place soon is a baseball base-ball carnival which will be held on July 14. This will consist of different age groups competing against each other for prizes. The events will be fungo hitting, distance throwing, accuracy throwing and base running with a point system used to determine winners. Set this date on your calendar and if you have nothing noth-ing to do come down and visit our playground. |
