Show l Home and School I I L League PRESIDENTS PRESIDENT'S YEARLY REPORT By Esther Call Stewart Provo Prove Utah The last year has brought about many new and unusual situations As an organization the Home Iome and School association has tried to adapt Itself Itsel to existing conditions and 1 become become be become be- be come a factor of ot usefulness in this great crisis We have encouraged loyalty economy and nd patriotism In inI fa fact a t efficient service has been our I slogan This great and terrible war Into which our cou ha has baa been plunged has tested and is testing our citizens I to the utmost And It has been our ouri i purpose as an organization to uphold lour our flag and sustain the high higl standards standards standards stand stand- ards of true citizenship of ot loyalty and self sel sacrifice that our forefathers set setIn setin setin In freeing our country from autocratic rule Every home has been called to tomake tomake tomake make Its sacrifice and our bo boys s the promising manhood of our country have gone forth liko Spartans of old and our moth mothers rs like Spartan mothers mothers mothers moth moth- ers have given them parting words of loyalty and encouragement The most precious blood will be spilt split In defending a cause we know to be right We Ve believe our brave boys who have gone to the front will do 10 honor to to- themselves credit to their country and efficient service in helpIng helping helpIng help- help Ing to suppress tyranny and In making the world free for democracy But what of ot those who remain at home On each of us devolves a task not so hard but quite as Important if it i we wo will give real service to our I country I Utah has been liberal with her I means and I T am proud of the record I ho has made Our association has j joined other organizations and citizens citi- citi I I zens in the great drive for Liberty J bonds and in upholding and forwardIng forwarding forwarding forward- forward 1 Ing the great conservation movement i j we have exerted our influence In interesting In Interesting in- in I the children in this worthy J campaign I I I I I To be he sure the Idea and work of at saving of at our sustenance is not new to the people of this state Our parents the pioneers were taught thrift and ec economy nomy in the hard school of oC experience And AmI this has redeemed this once arid desert and made It to blossom as the rose In answer answer to the tIie great national call mothers have put aside minor home duties foregone social obligations obligations obliga obliga- and generally given their timeto time timeto to conserva conservation ion of food and worked I enthusiastically in the Red ned Cross The par parents ot of our state have hav proved their dependency but our boys and girls have been reared under such favorable they have b become lecome come care free fre and thoughtless The work of the Home and School association throughout the state has been and is to aid the parents ii In InI their great undertaking to awaken I the children to a realization of the new duties of ot service that are to to tn be beI exacted of ot them We Yo encourage ever every boy and girl to become a member mem mem- I her ber of the Red ned Cross organization and with this membership should be made to sense that a responsibility rests upon them They should be made to feel that their duty is to render efficient and intelligent service not in n the trenches but on farms to plant and amI harvest harvest harvest har har- harI I vest the crops and to labor in all the various avenues to promote our cause i In the last year the school demonstrated demonstrated demon demon- I strat d its interest and of ot the home or of of the parents when I the schools closed and teachers and children went into the fields and orchards and assisted the farmers I and saved much valuable food that otherwise would have bae been wasted I I There was sas however a lack of inclination In Inclination in- in and efficiency on the part I of ot some som of 01 th tho boys boys and girls and consequently part of ot the crops were lost If we wo would win the war women women wom worn en and children of our state must assist In the fiel fields o and orchards and fill the tho vacancies caused by the tho absenCe absence absence ab ab- ab- ab sence of the bo boys s 's who are at the front And every girl and and- woman ma may feel honored in doing such service service service ser ser- vice to her country In the last year ear the Home and School association has tried to aid the p parents of ot the time state along the conservation lines by offering to them courses of lectures and demonstrations demonstrations demonstrations demon demon- that arc aro of ot vital importance to them at the present time The economic committee with Mrs Sirs II S. S Tanner TanneI and anel Mrs 1 George M. M Baconat Bacon at its head has conferred with the tho state Institutions and has outlined courses of study that are being most successfully given at present In twenty twenty ty tIp of the Salt Lake City schools and eight in Granite district and Provo l If this were the only achievement of ot I Ithe the tho Home and School association In Inthe inthe inthe the last year I should feel that our time had been well spent I In the past It has been regrettable to many that our educational 8 system stem has not offered more opportunities for the parents who must make the sacrifices and solve the weighty problems problems lems hems of life The child has apparently apparent apparent- I ly been the tho educators educator's solo sole concern But In the last year has come the dawning of a new educational era Parents who desire may become students students students stu stu- dents of our state institutions through their extension departments i and re receive re- re courses of study suitable to I their needs Is not this this this' an pa opportunity opportunity opportunity that should be appreciated and taken advantage of ot in every overy hamlet I in our stat state At present only a few communities can tal take e advantage of at I this liberal offer because it is being given through the Home and amid School I association and I am sorry to say there are comparatively few of ot these associations in our state We thoroughly realize that the organized organized organized or or- school fraternity must aid the unorganized parents In this step toward educational advancement Our OurI I plan Is to organize the tho Home and andI I School association In harmony with our great school system The state is divided into school districts for tor obvious reasons for these same samo reasons reasons reasons rea rea- sons should the Home and School associations be organized in this way I We Ve cannot properly assist hundreds of disconnected societies scattered here and t there ere throughout the state I II I but we can be of service to those as associations association's as- as s if it they will organize into I I as districts districts I believe it is the duty of I the school superintendents to organize the Home and School association that that tha citizens may have the advantages the state schools offer In the last year Mrs O. O R. R Thomas secretary m myself self and others have p passed a great deal of time trying to effect district organizations We Ve h hase e felt disheartened in the thelast thelast thelast last yea j on account of ot our unsuccessful unsuccessful attempt However we now feel encouraged as as Professor Mosiah 1 1 Hall has promised to act on our or organization organization organization or- or committee He will assist and stimulate superintendents and parents and no doubt during the coming year the advancement along this line will surpass our fondest anticipation We Ve consi consider r the Home and School association an arm asset to the school aswell as aswell aswell well as to the home It will lend aid aidin aidin aidin in handling problems that must be met b by all concerned In the welfare of the child We hope to assist in civic reforms and all knotty problems rob rob- lems hems of the community At the present pres pres- ent time our civic committee with Mrs John Z Brown as chairman Is prepared to give valuable suggestions along the line Une of ot better picture shows This committee has done lone excellent i work woric and as a result many clean educational censored pictures have I been given to our children Largely due to the efforts of this board is the new attitude of ot picture show managers managers man man- I agers agel'S who are now anxious to give the public pictures that will educate the children and be sanctioned b by thoughtful people In conclusion I wish to thank my officers who have so loyally supported me in my term of ot office And we as officers appreciate and thank the educators and parents who have as assisted assisted assisted as- as us so generously We have undertaken a work that will take I years ears to develop Yes I know It is worth while as it will be a benefit I to the citizens of the state and bring joy and satisfaction to those who aid aidIn aidin aidin I in its development I appreciate the honor that has been shown me and I my wishes and help herp will continue with the Home and School tion Let me emphasize once more that to fill fm its destiny this association association tion must not be satisfied until its influence fOI for good is felt in every I town and city in our fair state I |
