B Kynes Kyne's California workshop where It may bo be added the scenes described described de de- scribed are now being reenacted In the construction of a new Kyne Kyn novel titled tilled The Pride of Palomar to be published In book form next September The woman pays and pays That's why wh I am writing this Instead o of calling call can calling caning ing on Mrs Kyno lyno for the copy After ACter seeing to It personally y last year that Kindred of the Dust In Its entirety was on Its way eastward Mrs Kyne In the hope o of forgetting for a time the tho trials and tribulations o of an authors author's authors author's authors author's au au- thors thor's wife departed for the tho orient leaving to me the gigantic task of seeing that the next novel was written and delivered to the editor in time lime to commence serial publication on sched sched- ule When this new one is through a trip to the orient will will not be sufficient sufficient suf suf- to bring me back to my normal state A wife wile can do so much more than a mere sister or a near sister as the case is and Is-and and Im I'm Just a little fellow fellow fel fel- low ow I anticipated a daily tussle with this temperamental brother of mine until the novel was finished I find that I 1 a actually underestimated him When I 1 think I have him cowed ved and afraid to leave his typewriter while I IBO Igo BO go 0 for a ride or a swim I discover that hat the aforesaid relative author has sneaked off hunting or fishing When asked to explain he hangs his head and md looks sheepish murmuring It was such a glorious day I just i couldn't write But Ill I'll make up for forIt forit I It It t tomorrow Ill I'll get up at G 6 o'clock and have a couple o of thousand words lone done before breakfast The next morning at 9 o'clock said procrastinating author is dragged from rom his downy couch by said abbreviated abbreviated dated sister and put to work But I about 1 o'clock the typewriter will teed need a new ribbon or the oil can wille will willbe willbe be e empty and a very valid excuse I will NUl thus be found to abandon work I for or a couple o of hours O Of course this means the remainder of lof the day I Several months pass About the time Ime the novel is supposed to be finished fin fin- shed the unsuspecting editor writes to 0 inquire politely if the manuscript manuscripts is s on its way or if It not quite finished I about how much longer will il it take I By return mail he will learn that this particular novel has been very hard I to 0 write and that a great deal o of time las has been lost going after local color I However the completed manuscript will be in his hands not later than the he On the or of the succeeding month a wire comes from the editor saying that the manuscript must have been lost en route Poor credulous I man And poor conscientious sister now now ten pounds lighter and wearing wearing wearing wear wear- ing a harried expression However this telegram starts something The relative author conscience develops de a and decides that he had better send In some copy So the first two instalments Instalments instalments ments arc mailed with a letter telling the editor that he the has decided to revamp the remainder o of i the story Then feeling very virtuous virtu- virtu j ous Peter will take a long rest to I think about the remainder of the story stor until the first Instalment having I been published and the third not having having having hav hav- ing put in an appearance the editor I wires frantically for it Of course it J has not yet been written There has been no time to write The author has hasI been attending auction sales of purebred purebred purebred pure pure- I bred Jersey Duroc-Jersey swine and Holstein Holstein- Friesian cattle and he has spent a lotof lot lot of time leaning over a pig sty admiring admiring ing ing King Orion Jr who was second atthe at atthe the tho National Swine show last year Yes Peter Is a farmer and Fortunately he has a managing partner partner partner part part- ner the late I First Sergeant Cash of Captain Petes Pete's late regiment regiment other other other- wise wie we wo would all be bo suing him for forI nonsupport If It there were not hogs hogsand hogsand hogsand I and cattle to be bought or pumps or fencing to be put in in there wouldn't be beany beany any best seller to follow Kindred of I the tho Dust Our problem doesn't have to have I any inspiration to write a novel All he needs is an incentive Incentive-a a mine to toI I put gold into or a ranch to be stocked and financed until It is on a paying I basis basis maybe Then he will work and I the nearer broke he is the better work I Ithe he docs does Just remember this when In tho the future you rou read one of ot his his' stories stories I If It It strikes you ou as exceptionally goo good you will know know kno that the tho authors author's family family fam fam- ily lly was living on a bean basis w wIt while it was vas being written i To return to this new novel After i months of dilly dallying until t the nerves of every member of the Kyne Kyno family are frazzled until the tho telegraph wires between New ew York and California California California Califor Califor- nia are mere wisps and until the editors editor's editors editor's editors editor's edi edi- tors tor's dark brown locks are sprinkled with gray the story finally will be fin fin- And you readers who may enJoy enjoy en- en Joy It it will know nothing of the pain pain and forry It has caused everybody You will probably think of the author as having sat beneath the tho weeping willow tree or the shady bougainvillea I of the patio o of his California home lazily and anel easily writing a few thousand thousand thou thou- thou thou-I sand words a day until the completion of oC his story and then sending It to his favorite editor who will be waiting expectantly but not feverishly for Its receipt Thenceforth Just give a thought to tho wife or sister who has been sacrIficed sacrificed sacrificed to add to the output o of modern fiction This is tho the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth Peter B.
