Show I Colonel Chops I W Wood od for Girls By Miss Gladys I tyr Written for for the United Press WITH THE AMERICAN TROOPS AT THE FRONT By Mall MallOne Mall Mall- One bright bright- ht morning a few days ago Just after w we had awakened and before be before before be be- fore we had begun our work in the kitchen we heard some one chopping wood just jus back ack of the canteen cal We We were pleased for we needed wood chopped and nd it Is always nicer to h have ve some doughboy volunteer to do it than I to have to ask asIc I told lold told told-my my sister it must be the homesIck homesick home home- sick doughboy who had said the day before that chopping wood for us took him him back to home hom and his mother He said said said-he he fe felt t better after chopping some wood After fter i while we left our billet and went around to the kitchen Who do you suppose was out there chopping the wood It was not the homesick lck dough doughboy boy or any other doughboy but the colonel Of the regiment himself We were too surprised to see him swinging the ax to know what to say and almost forgot forgot forgot for for- got to thank him He said he liked his new Job and accepted our invitation invitation invitation tation to have breakfast with us But the doughboys all say he is encroaching encroach encroach- ing on their rights when he chops wood for tor us THE HOMESICK SOLDIER Th The homesick doughboy was a an In Interesting interesting In- In problem to us He had re received received re- re no mail for four months from home and read In jn a paper one of re-I re his pals had received of the death of his sister His father Is not living either and the poor boy could hardly keep from crying I Of course we wanted to do something something something some some- thing for tor him but it H HIs is hard to help everyone like Uke that when you dont don't know them We dont don't dare to show too much attention to anyone no I matter how much he needs It Jt because It wouldn't be fair to the others So Sowe Sowe we Just put the homesick doughboy to I work He did everything we suggested suggest suggest- ed cut cut wood fixed benches fried doughnuts and by the end of the day I he was whistling and singing Work seems to be the b best st thing we can give them when they are homesick From time to time we have had boys near our canteens who were more help than tha the ordinary crowd They usually were more faithful than others and got to be our favorite workers workers though though we always tried to stick to our rule and never be partial But we we- cant can't let the boys make pies or doughnuts They never would learn to do it right though some of them can be trusted with dipping doughnuts doughnuts doughnuts dough dough- nuts or putting the pies In the oven and removing them if we tell them when they are done We divide the work among us I always mix the doughnut dough and make the pies and my sister manages the financial end of the canteen That arrangement arrangement arrange arrange arrange- ment gives us both the work we we like best Weve We've Just renewed the pie business but not permanently we fear We had no no ov oven n In this little village we weare weare weare are now In and couldn't bale pies for fora a long time But the boys' boys mouths watered watered watered wa wa- for tor pie and finally a lieutenant found an old French stove stove- in some ruins We h had bad d to half halt bury it to strengthen it It enough for tor use but but- it works well enough to give the boys boysa a taste of pie every week or so Pie day almos almost means a riot so many boys want a slice |
