Show Shaw Bemoans loss of Eight 1941 Regulars I By ByL IT T. T BUCK SHAW I Santa Cl Clara ra Coach The inexperience of or our personnel personnel personnel person person- nel and the arrangement of our games makes our 1942 schedule the most difficult in Santa Claras Clara's football history Due to graduation graduation graduation tion and enlistments 21 men are I missing from our 1942 roster Eight men are gone from our 41 starting eleven and eight from our second unit i The most serious losses in the I backfield were Ken Casanega at left half Joe and Jim Honnert Honnert Honnert Hon- Hon nert at full and Frank Petersen and Ward Heiser at right half In the line our first four guards are gone Rope Thornton George Dave Simmons and Paul Williams our first two tackles Captain Bill Beggs and Bill Braun and four ends who saw most of the action last fall Ray Bradfield Tom Matula Steve Cardwell and Bob For the most part our 1942 squad must be built around the established veterans Ed Forrest Al AI and Al Beals in inthe the theline line and Jesse Freitas in the backfield backfield back- back field with five sophomores looking like starters This presents a serious problem after looking over our schedule calling for games on consecutive consecutive con con- Saturdays against Stanford Stanford Stanford Stan Stan- ford California Oregon State and UCLA after opening our season against Utah at Salt Lake the consistent Big Seven champion The most promising sophomores on the line and those we must depend depend depend de de- pend upon to carry the load this fall are Guy Giacopuzzi at center Bart Gianelli Jack Adams and Bill BiU Johns at guards Harvey Smith at tackle and Tom Fears Cy Smith and Bill Diffenbaugh at ends I Al AI Beals Santa Claras Clara's choice for American all end honors in 1942 seems secure in his position but Jim Desmond and Ken Dewing are not at all safe with these three sophomores pressing them In the backfield Hank and Pete Davis were gradually easing the veterans Les Palm and Jerry out of the quarterback quarterback quarterback quarter quarter- back spot and Bill Prentice and John Christenson will keep Jesse Freitas at his best if he hopes to stay in there Pat Higgins and Dick Bauer were giving the veterans Jack Matthews Matthews Matthews Mat Mat- and Max Sailor headaches at right half and ope one or the other is likely to be a starter At fullback fullback fullback full full- back Paul Vinolla has displayed sufficient talent to warrant every consideration as a starter From the above it will be seen that we must look largely to our sophomores for success s success this faland fall fal falland falland and carrying this inexperience into a a. schedule does not present present present pre pre- sent a bright picture It is my hope and belief belie however however how how- ever that we will improve gradually gradually grad grad- as we go along and should be ae a representative team before half of our schedule is completed We will start our season with more mor inexperience than at any time during during during dur dur- ing the past six years and I am counting on the enthusiasm o of these sophomores to pull u us through |
