Show j Joins Army 1 11 i it t hi O Larr Larry l MacPhall Qu Quits Dodgers 1 ers for arm army Dodger Angel i Quits to Join Service Again By LA TON LAY CARVER NEW YORK Sept 24 INS INS INS- Larry MacPhail has left the Brooklyn Brooklyn Brook Brook- lyn Dodgers I would like to say that everybody will regret his passing from president of the Bums to a commission in the army but that would be far from the truth Many wish he had never arrived in these parts at all I Iam Iam Iam am not among these I knew the Dodgers when they were the worst handled bunch of incompetents ever to be a part of baseball in inthis inthis inthis this immediate vicinity Then I watched MacPhail build them into a pennant contender a pennant winner and a threat for this season while at the same time he built up the finan financial ial standing of the club from a great smear of red ink into a profitable tion Some may doubt with great vociferousness that he is the best thing that has happened to the National National Na Na- league in years and they may tell teIl you he is a boisterous bully but I doubt that anybody will attempt to d deny ny that he was the savior of the Cincinnati Reds first when he ran that club then of the Dodgers since he took over in Brooklyn Mr MacPhail has his faults a notable one being an inveterate inability to observe genteel decorum decorum decorum de de- de- de corum at all times and avoid little with his fellow man but as far as I am concerned the things he has done for baseball have far outweighed any broken hearts that he will leave behind among those who clashed with him Dont Don't overlook him as a soldier He had an admirable rable record in the thelast thelast thelast last war as a captain He will do equally well In the current unpleasantness unpleasantness unpleasantness un un- un- un pleasantness and the worst mistake mistake mistake mis mis- take the enemy could possibly make would be to capture him He would make them wish they had never started a war |
