Show A T t f I One ne Week Wee in in Camp CampIn In one week the citizens who win volunteered for military training at Fort ort Douglas have learned many important facts They have begun to understand iii ill a small way the helplessness of this country c from a military standpoint for they have caught an idea of the vast vat amount of knowledge and training necessary to build up an efficient fighting machine V. V They also have learned THAT IT IS NOT NOr NECESSARY TO HAVE WAR TO REAP THE TIIE T BENEFITS OF OP MILITARY TRAINING I Doctors lawyers merchants high officials of big corporations with heavy burdens resting on them and am bankers' bankers sons are arc sleeping in iii arm armr bunks beside men who earn their bread by physical toil on farms and in factories AND ALL ARE tHE HE BEST OF PALS ALL ALLARE ALLARE ALLARE ARE CARE FREE AND HAPPY TOGETHER AND ALL ARE I FRIENDLY AND INTIMATE From a standpoint of citizenship we believe this is the greatest benefit the camp will afford for the public It will bring men of different walks in life closer together it will tend to break down snobbishness and misunderstanding It will prove a n great clearing clearinghouse clearinghouse clearinghouse house for the exchange of ideas ideals and aspirations Here the fellow who has been fortunate in his surroundings and has had plenty of luxuries rubs elbows with the man who has hobnobbed all his life with poverty who has struggled for everything he has gotten AND THE ELBOWS OF BOTH ARE COVERED WITH THE SAME CLOTH AS COLONEL HAGOOD SAID IN InS IDS VERY EXCELLENT ADDRESS c TO THE TIlE MEN AT AP THE TIlE CAMP CAMP We We are all cut from the same cloth some cloth some have better luck than others And that is the fine spirit of this gathering at Fort Douglas IT IS TIlE THE SPIRIT OF bB GENUINE DEMOCRACY SUCH DEMOCRACY SUCH AS CIVILIANS ARE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO ENJOYING The citizen soldiers find that wh what t they imagined were CLASSES t were ere after all aU only IMAGINARY THEY rIlEY ARE ALL JUST PLAIN GOOD AMERICANS with aS a S common love for their country and their flag and while they arcS arc are S giving in service and time they are also receiving bounteous return S u ll the many valuable lessons learned and in the discipline and S B physical training that will prove of inestimable worth 8 The citizen soldiers also are arc learning that army officers are very S 3 after fter a all l an and are different from from their fellows only in the S S j f systematic way in m which they go about their work vork t And further the citi citizens ens are learning that it is not necessary to tos s lN lNe 1 have ave e a c commission for or a regular to o be a gentleman Most 1 of the noncommissioned officers acting as instructors at Fort jort Douglas would jj AA a credit to any profession They are doing much to give the ther 5 i r I rookies a feeling of respect for the army h 1 p S T A And d when v enthis this camp is over we feel sure that hat many fa false se notions s bout militarism will have been expelled six hundred citizens will L ILy avo a warmer spot in in their hearts than ever for the service and the thc I Spirit of democracy developed d there will grow and ripen into many sting lasting and happy friendships that would not have crossed the imaginary lines of class distinction under other conditions S We feel safe in saying that the citizens at Fort Douglas would S i L S Vote practically practical y unanimously that the first week of the camp proved a tremendous success from every standpoint I S I |
