Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett I So "Buddy" Thomas joined Rex Lanes' Bum of the month ! club when Rex stopped him in i I the second round Wednesday j ! night at the fair ground. How a i fellow like Thomas could get his 1 name in the Ring magazine is past me. He was in no condition i to fight, and had no actions that might lead one to believe he had ever boxed, anything but a friendly match in the basement with some neighbor. There isn't any question that Lane is a comer, he has already shown he could hit and that he was able to take a punch in winning the A.A.U. heavyweight championship, champion-ship, and in beating Perko, the Golden Glove champion. But so l far in his pro career he has had ; no opposition. I know he can't j be rushed too fast. But why not I get him some rough tough youngsters young-sters instead of fellows so old, I they can't hold up their hands. He is going to fight "Buddy" i Walker next Wednesday the 10th. I Now "Buddy" has been a good boy and on his record he should be a real test for young Lane, but I think it is the duty of those responsible to see whether or not he is in condition to put up ! an honest exhibition. Because it , will only take about one more I like the Thomas affair to kill ! Lane deader than a DoDo, us a j drawing card in the boy's own state. Fortunately the rest of j Wednesday's card was away a-, a-, bove par. Every fight on the j suppoi ting card was a honey. ! The Industrial league second i half rate has' settled down to j what looks like a three club race (between Provo, American Fork and Magna. I doubt whether 1 magna has enough pitching to I take them all the way. Provo has just signed Wakenshaw, the Salt Lake boy who has been with Ta-coma Ta-coma in the P. I. A. class B league, and American Fork has Woodbury, Wood-bury, the Cedar City boy just released by the Bees. Helper needs a short stop and another pitcher, because the secudle is against them with only a two-man two-man staff. Bingham hasn't won one the second half but they did take .Magna in an exhibition game ! played for Gary Archibald. De-j De-j Col looked real sharp in this j cne. Stuckenschneider and Poul-usen Poul-usen have pitched good enough to win if their mates could have gotten a couple of hits at the right time. But the boys have improved and have played en-j en-j tortaihing games every time out. ' See you next week. AL |
