Show A SINGULAR CASE A queer case is reported in New York A mothers mothers mother's mothers mother's moth moth- ers er's son of 18 was killed while at work and an action action ac ac- ac tion was brought for by the father who had been appointed administrator of his estate Five weeks after the accident that resulted in the boys boy's death the father died and and the case w was s continued bythe bythe by bythe I the widow and mother who was left with six children children chil chil- dren to support The law provides that if au m unmarried child dies tho the father or next nest of kin inherits all his llis property There There- is also a law that damages can be recovered b by the one who llO lio is next of kin at the time of death and in the case of tho the death of the next of kin the action abates The court decided that under these laws the mother had no right of action and awarded her 30 that being the amount of the boys boy's wages from froni the time of his death to the death of his father We Yo have heard of but one case to parallel that When Cleveland was first elected president he had no good feeling toward union soldiers he exhibited ex cx- it in man many ways At last a pension case came up Congress had promptly passed the pension It was of a negro who was a slave at the time of his death but when the war came on he ran away joined the union army put on the uniform of an American soldier and in his first battle was yas shot through the heart His old mother asked for a pension the full statement of the facts being given rr Ir Cleveland's then attorney general General Black decided that inasmuch as the boy was a slave when he ran away and was under the law a slave when wIlen he lie died for his country notwithstanding the fact that he lie died in itt trying to save the country's integrity integrity in in- he was nobody and therefore his mother was not entitled to any pension and Mr Cleveland promptly vetoed the bill And when he lIe died the other day lIay even the tho present president of the United States thought he lIe was exceedingly like liko Abraham Lincoln which only proves that it is a happy fact that with some men death gives to them a sanctity which they never acquired in life |
