C May 29 Pur Fur Further ther then advices regarding the disastrous typhoon in the Caroline islands recently recent recent- recently ly reported by cable from Sydney Australia Aus Aus- were received in today's mails from the Orient The typhoon passed over the Caroline group March 28 and hundreds of people were killed by the waves which swept over the smaller islands Those who were saved were were mostly those who had bad climbed coc cocoanut anut trees The typhoon extended as far west as Guam At the Manila observatory tory on March 30 the typhoon was registered as being northeast of Yap I in th the I western Carolinas March 31 it was found to be north of Yap indicating a danger zone of the entire area between the Carolines and the Philippines Philippine The accuracy of the observations of the Manila observatory were confirmed on receipt of advices from Yap Yap- and th the Carolines The island of Ulie was entirely d destroyed de and the waves which passed over this island killed persons Heavy loss of life was reported from other islands Some were entirely covered covered cov ered and natives were rescued days afterward af clinging to the tops of cocoanut cocoa cocoa- nut trees On Wilson island twenty people were killed and on Sirol or Philips island which lies between Yap and Ulie Uhe fifty people perished The majority ma ma- of the islands were desolated and the loss is said to be great reat |
