sur stir rounding territories who were being beinA do- do the privilege of education except in ma the rude schools of the frontier It was his hi elut duty to secure for them the means of gaining an education at home The result was the founding of St. St Marys Mary's Iary s 's academy which was built in 1876 at a cost ost of about This was considered at that time a 1 stupendous dous dotis less than to the church There was crying need for a hospital In those days das there was no first class hospital pital within hundreds of miles The sick and the tho injured suffered tortures being denied proper treatment unless they thES had the means of taking a long journey In hundreds hundred of cases such a journey lourney was impossible Father Scanlan set about to provide a place where broken bodies could be repaired The outcome of his efforts was the establishment of Holy Cross hospi hospital ta 1 The or original inal buildings were on Fifth East street between South Temple and First South streets on the tho west side sido of tho the street Tho The buildings were not large largo nor imposing but they represented to the little church an outlay outlay out out- lay Iny of rents that were a constant drain dram drainon dramon on the finances Buys Hospital Site To rid the church of the rent incubus Father Scanlan purchased for the tho church the ten acre acro tract of land now occupied by the hospital in the square bounded by South Temple Templo and First South streets and Tenth and Eleventh Ele East streets This tract of ot land which was then far from the residence section was bought for That was in 1881 Some critics considered it folly to buy this land but tile the wisdom of Father Scanlan was seen in 1892 when whon the church was offered for the property The offer was declined The buildings 8 and equipment are are easily worth at this time with theland tho the tholand tholand land valued at a much lar larger er sum With the establishment of the Starrs St. St Marys Mary's arrs arr's school for girls and the new v hospital in condition to minister to the needs of the people Bishop Scanlan continued his efforts with the result that All AlI Hallows Hallo Kearns donated more than for the construction of suitable buildings s. s This handsome donation which was wag wasen given en as quickly as suggestion was made is a lasting tribute to the piety and hen there was not the money in hand to keep the work going but Bishop Scanlan did not cease his persevering efforts until the hu huge e building was wal completed Bishop Scanlan has bas had personal char charge e of all the tho operations He lIe has supervised the most minute details of the work and as a result there is no finer fiDer church edifice in the west than the cathedral of St. St Mary Magdalene There was delay at tho the be beginning by reason of exorbitant demands of con ron tractors Finding them not amenable to reason Bishop Scanlan himself took char charge e of the work Labor Record Remarkable During the entire ten years not a aman aman aman man has been killed or injured while whito at work on the building There has never been a wage dispute nor a dissatisfied arraignment ar ar- ar before belore before Pilate and ending with tho the Laying in the tho Tomb are of terra cotta in bold relief This Journey of the Cross is peculiarly impressive Each of tho the
