D Noyes Director Department of Nursing Amer Amer- ican kan Red Cross and President American American Amer Amer- ican Nurses' Nurses Association How many many- times after a sleepless nl night ht when you have tossed restlessly restless restless- ly 17 on a mussed wrinkled bed have you longed for the cool touch of fresh sheets before YO you faced another day of f sickness One of the greatest luxuries as well as necessities which a patient may have is clean bed linen each day What Is more important however is for every woman who has charge of ot the I sick to possess the skill to make an occupied bed without tiring the paI patient pa pa- I tient or exposing him to draft REMOVE FROM ONE SIDE Remove the pillows by inserting one I arm under the patients patient's head and shoulders while gently withdrawing the pillows with the other Loosen the bedding at the sides and foot supporting supporting supporting sup sup- porting the matt mattress ess with the other ther hand so that you will not jar the pa pa- tient Fold back and remove nit all covers cover except one ono blanket which shou should d be tucked snugly about the sick person After loosening the sheet gently turn the patient to the far side of ot the bed Then roll the soiled sheet tightly but smoothly up to the patients patient's back bec ber ber be- be r c 1 Ing lug careful however to keep her well covered With the blanket blank t. t Take a large clean sheet and place placeit it on t the bed as If you were making an unoccupied one Make a long smooth roll of the tire unused half of the sheet and tuck it close under the patients patient's patients patient's patients patient's pa pa- tient's back Adjust one one half of the top sheet and place the pillows with clean slips on this side of the bed One- One half of the bed is now made with clean linen while the patient is lying on the soiled draw and bottom sheets on the other side TO CHANGE GOWN Now comes the time to change the gown of ot the sick person After pulling pullIng pull pull- ing the garment up t to 1 her shoulders slip her upper arm out of the sleeve and with one hand band placed gently un under under un- un der del the head while thile you gather the gown In the other slip the soiled garment garment gar gar- I ment meat like a hoop over her head and I under her neck Now draw her upper arm through the sleeve of the clean gown and by inserting your hand band under her head again slip the gown over her head and down under her herI neck The patient may now be turned I to the clean side of the bed which will allow the nurse to remove the soiled gown cown entirely and draw the clean garment smoothly under the sick person USE OF BED CRADLE Go now to the other side of the bed remove the soiled linen and adjust the clean sheets as if you were making an all empty bed If the covers are too tight over the toes of the patient the pressure presSUre pressure pres pres- sure may be relieved by a bed ed cradle cradIc or If It one is not convenient a makeshift makeshift makeshift make make- shift made by using a double fold of ot bandage and a large safety pin may maybe maybe maybe be used Pin this bandage through the spread ad to the blankets and the top sheet directly where the pressure comes then tie the bandage tightly to the foot of the bed There Is some danger of tearing the tha sheets unless cate care car is taken to secure a large pin |
