Show I In New Jersey I ITHE THE THE HE New v J Jersey legislature has started off with the apparent determination to prove to the world that it is a principality of itself and that it can do as it blamed pleases The pretty town of Trenton is apparently crowded with statesmen w who o believe they are mightier than the entire federal government The legislature starts out by attempting to prove that while n national prohibition may apply to other states it does not apply to tow New w Jersey What is intoxicating in Rhode Island is not going to be in intoxicating in New Jersey for the l legislature at Trenton is going to change the national law to suit its own particular thirst We Ve dont don't believe it can be be done don done The plan of having state laws vs' contradict federal laws has been tried but it has never worked The state is subservient to the nation and state laws are subservient to national enactments If you dont don't believe it it recall the solution of the slavery problem m. m The New Jersey legislature has also apparently barred action on the national suffrage amendment nt by adopting a resol resolution tion that it be the settled policy of the assembly that in the future all proposed constitutional changes should first be submitted to the people for their vote before the legislature acts W We commend the wisdom of the policy but deplore its Us exer exec exercise cise eise at this time There is no doubt that suffrage will wilt soon pre pre- vail All New Jersey can do is to delay it for a short time therefore we believe it would have been better for the legislature to have acted on suffrage first and adopted its popular vote policy later liter The time time is coming we believe when no constitutional amendment will witt become law until it has been voted on directly and approved by the people Also there should be a provision by which an existing amendment can be set aside by popular vote But we regret the h haste ste of the New Jersey legislature in adopting in-adopting this plan planas as IS Its set policy before a a. chance chanc chance was given for the legislators to vote ote on the suffrage ge amendment |
