Show I Parties and Suffrage I WHEN HEN the Susan B. B Anthony amendment is finally passed by congress and the question of suffrage submitted to the various states for ratification some partisans can be expected to take full credit and point with pride to the accomplishment Look what we have done they will say to the woman voters and the looking will be good but for any political party to claim credit for the granting of the franchise to women will be false boasting We Ve recall that for sixteen years years the Republicans were in control of congress and suffrage failed to obtain even polite con con- Then the Democrats were in control for six years and the consideration became a bit more kindly thanks perhaps to tardy but welcome recognition of the worth of the cause b by Y YM M f President Wilson Vilson and suffrage nearly prevailed Now with the Republicans back in the saddle again the women seem seem certain of victory but it is not a partisan victory Credit is due solely to those women who ha have hac c labored so long and faithfully for the cause standing ridicule during the early t f fi years of the the- struggle submitting to sneers and jeers but never i faltering because they knew they severe ere right And we cannot I think of congress for the last six years or the last two twenty r years without being ashamed that it took so long to convince the legislators that these women were right We Ve congratulate T the women and deny that any political party can claim credit for r their victory 1 |
