Show Bunch of New Players MaIe tie Sea Smile I I First Baseman Shortstop and Catcher Are Added tt Giant Club oster by Manager ManagerS S Bill I 1 Feeling much better Yes President 1 Jim had a smile I P on his face yesterday yes yes- I after after- noon It told its own story Good progress is IS being made in rounding out the Seattle baseball club which is Is to try conclusions with rivals in the Coast league circuit A first string sting catcher a fine shortstop short short- stop and great fielding first baseman baseman base base- man were added to the roster yesterday afternoon True there will probably be several changes and some additions before things finally settle down to bedrock but If one will take the trouble to look over carefully the preliminary lineup of the Seattle club which Is stowed away In a box at the top of this article he will see that President JIm Is entitled en en- titled to smile Pr President Jim and Manager Bill Clymer have lived up to their reputations reputations for hustling Neither of them has said a word about havIng the grea greatest est ball club in captivity but either one of them could say with considerable con con- assurance This Is' Is what we have built from nothing In less than a month It does not l look ok so bad Manager Bill Clymer has never neer finished finished fin fin- below third in all his baseball experience but It Is doubtful if he ever tackled as hard a job as the present one l llIe lIe He has nas work worked d like a a. Trojan but the public sees only the result What has gone before the player is finally secured secured se- se cured does doe not come to the surface One incident Is sufficient to illustrate illus illus- what Clymer has been up against in t trying to get hold of the players he wants in the East PItcher Al Dema- Dema rp rec who has been with Philadelphia d ii New York at different times happened hap hap- to be a free agent Clymer commenced com com- hap j negotiating with him and wa along nicely Suddenly the Boston Braves Brav took It into their heads that Demaree would go all tight Ight on their club They butted in on Clymer and signed him Of course Demaree had rather had rather play In the big league than drop down a notch No o one can blame hIm for tor accepting Boston's offer But that does not do away with the fact that Clymers Clymer's work was thrown away SIGNS SHORTSTOP But Manager Bill has kept right on working no matter what obstacles have been thrown In his way The Theother Theother other day he put over n. n bit of business that should mean a lot to the club Balked in getting a shortstop from the Boston Braves Draves he turned elsewhere and finally landed Leverno Fabrique who was a star with the Providence i club in 1916 and went strong with Toledo Toledo To- To ledo In 1917 Fabrique attracted the I attention of the major leagues not long ago and was given a trial by the New NewYork NewYork I York Americans He tell fell just short of making good In the big circuit Ho He I hits either right or left handed and while not in the class will come come along with the average infielder According According Ac- Ac cording to the telegram Manager 1 Clymer sent President Brewster Fabrique Fab- Fab I rique has signed his contract and will soon be in the training camp at Taft Cal along with the bunch that is gathering there now GUS GLEICH GLEICHMAN MAN The second deal was the signing of First Baseman Gus Gleichman who played with St. St Paul in the American association last year He Is now livIng living liv- liv Ing at Cal and did not care to return to the East Clymer evidently thinks well of him as he telegraphed President Brewster to get him when I the tip was passed out that there was wasa a chance sent word yesterday that he had accepted terms an and l would join Seattle He also gave the information that he was a free agent This last phase of the case will bring up a point that the powers of baseball will have to settle The St. St Paul club claimed Gleichman and made an offer which Seattle accepted If Gleichman really belonged to St. St Paul then the agreement agree agree- mont ment will hold If Gleichman was a afree afree free agent St St. Paul cannot expect Seattle Seattle Se- Se attle to hand over a bunch of money for tor his release AFTER While it may be going a little too farto tar far to say fay that Seattle has actually Secured se- se cured a first string er everything seems to warrant that conclusion Manager Clymer has arranged a deal with the indianapolis club of the American association for the purchase of Catcher a brother of Wally Vally one of the stars of the majors Manager Clymer says that Isa is a a. wonderful thrower and good receiver lie He is only a fair clouter With Pete Ritchie and Tom Cunningham Seattle will enter the r ce in good shape behind the bat Something might happen to prevent Seattle getting getting get get- ting but President Brewster wired Clymer to gO ahead and clOse the deal If was Satisfactory to him The exact amount to be paid for release was not given out but it was close to 1000 COSTING MONEY It Is costing a good bit of money to collect the tho Seattle team but that was the only way It could be done on short notice Pitcher Morton who was purchased pur- pur chased from the Toledo club cost somewhere between 1500 and 2000 He must be a good one because Clymer Clymer Cly- Cly mer said he was among the best In Inthe inthe the American assocIation It Is a safe bet that Seattle will before be- be tore fore April 1 With Gleichman who Is a remarkable remarkable remark remark- able fielder and fall fair hitter on first there will be a great for the outfield positions Joe Wilhoit Marty Kavanaugh and JImmy Walsh are arc the three big leaguers first to be consid- consid ered The first two of the tle trio are and will be hard to displace Walsh is a great outfielder but the same is true of Bm Bill Cunningham And Andin In passing do not overlook a fellow I named Wilson Tie He is a Pacific Northwest Northwest North North- west product but if he does not make some of the others hustle for their jobs it will be a surprise The placing of Roy Brown at second base on the Seattle club does not mean necessarily that he will hold down the position In iii good shape If Bill Leard or some other person does not bob up to supplant him He should have been beena a major leaguer but like alot of other minor leaguers he c nt quite get there Manager Claymer would one or two more first class pitchers and If I the chances come right he will up another infielder He Is in a position I tion now however to commence getting get get- I ting his team into shape He has made a a. good beginning and that is a lot I |
