Smith. 917 North Second West street, committed suicide by swal lowing cyanide of potassium yesterday in dormitory at Harvard university, because he failed to qualify for an A. B. degree. N Eleven veam ago the bnv's mother died in this city and the father took him at the aire of 12 to live in the home of Mr Hmith's sister-in-law, Mra. I. N. Pike, at Lynn. Mass. The father has been seodiiig money to him for his education and looking ahead with fond bones to his advancement in the world owing to those opportunities furnished at Harvard. Hegot a telegram iast night from Mr. Pike notifying him of the suicide. Irving C. Smith, younger brother, who has been living at the home of Mr. Smith's sinter in Randolph, Mass.. wrote to his father three weeks ago. expressing the wish that the latter could attend the graduation nt his brother at Harvard this month, tie said that his brother had enjoyed good health, missing only one week out of four years in the university. Arthur Smith first went to the Poplar Grove school and later to the Franklin school, in this eity, before going east. His body will be buried in Lynn, Mass. |
